When the New York Mets signed veteran reliever Luke Weaver in the offseason, it seemed as if they got a solid setup man to go along with Devin Williams, who they also signed during the offseason. They stole the New York Yankees’ setup and closer options and brought them to the other side of New York after losing a few relievers over the winter, including Edwin Díaz. The Mets knew they needed to bulk up their bullpen even more, and so they did, and it felt as if they had some solid options. Sadly, this wasn’t the case to begin the year for Weaver.
Luke Weaver Bouncing Back After Slow Start to the Year
Slow Out of the Gate
Weaver got off to a very rough start to the year. After appearing in 12 games in April, he racked up an ERA of 6.00 in 12 innings pitched. Mets fans seemed to already give up on him quickly after that, especially with the huge losing streak that occurred that same month. Weaver made a few quotes during his month of struggle, trying to explain the mood in the Mets’ locker room at the time.
“Typically, you don’t see an entire collective group at the same time not playing their best brand of baseball,” Weaver said. “It just feels like there is a little bit of a culture that has adapted to it unintentionally. That’s just how winning and losing goes.” Thankfully, after Weaver said this, things began to turn for the better.
Weaver Has a Dominant May
In May, Weaver completely turned it around. In 11 appearances, he pitched 12 2/3 innings and gave up zero runs, as well as striking out 16 batters. Not only was May a good month for him, but he has continued this stretch into June, with 5 1/3 shutout innings so far. Right now, Weaver has a scoreless streak of 18 innings and has dropped his ERA three-plus points to a solid 2.40. During this scoreless streak, Weaver has only given up ten hits and four walks; he is on an absolute heater right now for the Mets pen.

When Weaver was asked about his May performance and continuing the dominance, he responded humbly. “Just stacking the next one together with the next,” he said. “It’s not trying to get too emotionally attached to outing after outing. It’s more about building. If you want to stack them together, you stack months together.” Weaver has been a big help in shutting down that eighth inning for the Mets as of late. It is a promising sign for a guy like him to continue to stay hot, as the Mets will need to stack as many wins as possible for a run.
Can Weaver Break the Scoreless Streak Record by a Reliever?
As of right now, Weaver still has a way to go before he gets close to the scoreless streak record by a reliever. The current record is 41 innings set by Gregg Olsen of the Baltimore Orioles from 1989-1990. So while it still lies far down the road, it can be an interesting record to keep an eye on if he stays on a roll.
Can Weaver Continue to be a Spark in the Pen?
The Mets will need Weaver to continue to be a spark, as maybe he can set an example for the rest of the team and help them to get going. It is encouraging to see him get back to how he was when he was in the Yankees’ pen and when he had those dominant spurts for them. It should be an exciting rest of the season for Weaver, even if the Mets don’t end up making the postseason.
