Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Ernie Clement hitting a three-run home run vs the New York Yankees during the fourth inning at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York on May 18, 2026.

Blue Jays’ Ernie Clement Is the Key To Unlocking Success Against the Yankees

Despite the efforts of Toronto Blue Jays’ Ernie Clement on May 18, the ballclub ultimately dropped the first matchup of their four-game set against the New York Yankees.

New York took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Paul Goldschmidt homered on a fly ball to right-center. But once the top of the fourth rolled around, 30-year-old Clement stepped up to the plate with his eyes set on a massive hit.

Southpaw Ryan Weathers tossed to Clement, who then smacked a 381-foot homer on a fly ball to left center, allowing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kazuma Okamoto to score. This is the kind of heat that fans know Clement’s bat to be capable of, but now is the time to continue turning the knob as the Blue Jays take on their remaining three games against the Yankees.

Blue Jays’ Ernie Clement Must Step Up

Toronto hasn’t been known for its offensive prowess in recent weeks, but Clement could be the cornerstone for the franchise once again, as seen during the 2025 postseason. So far this year, he is slashing .283/.309/.406 with a .715 OPS and three homers through 46 games.

His stat sheet isn’t as glowing as it has been in recent years, particularly when compared to his .885 OPS during his 2023 campaign, but keep in mind that the ballclub is still quite fresh into the season. Not to mention, the franchise has fallen victim to the IL, as have several other teams across the nation.

During his latest matchup in New York, fans were treated to vivid flashbacks of the Clement they’ve become widely accustomed to. Unfortunately, his three-run homer was not enough to fend off the Yankees, who rallied for the 7-6 victory in Game one this week.

If there’s any hitter who can carry the Blue Jays to victory, it would be Clement. Alongside slugger George Springer, who had an impressive night of his own with a home run to left center field in the top of the fifth.

Blue Jays’ Ernie Clement Acts as the Glue

Adding to the importance of Clement’s rising momentum, Toronto continues to grapple with the injured list, which has claimed several notable players. Among the top hitters out of commission are Alejandro Kirk with a left thumb sprain and Addison Barger with right elbow inflammation.

Kirk is expected to return toward the beginning of June, and as long as Barger wraps up a smooth recovery, he should return later in May. Until then, Clement acts as the glue and has a lot riding on his shoulders as he aims to boost the Blue Jays’ offensive production.

With Toronto ranked 20th in baseball with 44 homers, there’s a glaring need for improvements at the plate if the franchise wants to reach postseason contention in the months to come and potentially make a second consecutive run to the World Series.

The primary key here will be to prioritize a healthy lineup. But this is all the more true for Clement, who will likely serve as the determining factor for the Blue Jays as the season progresses. Will he succumb to the pressure or use this as an opportunity to continue proving his worth?
