Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

Dodgers reliever Brock Stewart (41) comes out of an August 2025 game.

High-Leverage Dodgers Reliever Can’t Stay Healthy, Heads Back to Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers are placing right-handed reliever Brock Stewart on the injured list again, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. This time, it is for a bone spur in his foot. Starter Blake Snell, who will make his season debut against the National League-best Atlanta Braves on Saturday, takes Stewart’s place on the roster. There has been no timetable announced for the reliever’s return.

Dodgers Reliever Brock Stewart Injured Again

Short-Lived Return

Stewart just returned from an extended absence after undergoing shoulder surgery late last season. His abbreviated stint with the Dodgers lasted two appearances this season. The right-handed reliever has not allowed a run and struck out three. Stewart apparently had the bone spurs at the beginning of the season. He was able to play through them until he aggravated them covering first base last night. Stewart was able to complete the inning and get some big outs in the process. He will be evaluated further on Monday.

Back Where It All Began

The right-hander began his major league career as a member of the Dodgers organization. Originally a starter, Stewart found his groove as a reliever when he signed with the Minnesota Twins. The shorter outings allowed him to find more velocity on his fastball and develop a filthy sweeper. His repertoire and his sub-3.00 ERA garnered attention at the trade deadline last season. The Dodgers, who were bereft of high-leverage right-handed relief options, acquired Stewart for the stretch run. Unfortunately, the injury bug that has haunted him in his career continues to bite Stewart, severely limiting his availability.

Ace on the Mound

As for Snell, he has been out since spring training with shoulder fatigue. The Dodgers were hoping that the two-time Cy Young Award winner would be stretched to five innings in a rehab start before returning to a big-league mound. It wasn’t to be. The writing was on the wall when Tyler Glasnow was felled with back spasms. Fortunately, the right-hander is only expected to miss minimal time. The Dodgers are built for the unexpected ups and downs of a baseball season. It’s good that they are prepared, because their depth is being tested early and often.
