Spencer Jones rounds the bases for the Yankees in spring training.

Report: Yankees Call Up Their #6 Overall Prospect, Place Outfielder on the IL

The New York Yankees are making some roster moves to their outfield. Jasson Dominguez is being place on the IL and the team is calling up their #6 overall prospect Spencer Jones to the big leagues. Freelance reporter Francys Romero was the first to report the news of the call up.

Dominguez to the IL

Right before Dominguez crashed into the wall, manager Aaron Boone told the media that “I think he’s continued to get a little bit better all the time. He’s still got a ways to go there to reach his potential out there, because he is so athletic. But he has worked hard at it, and I feel like he definitely has continued to move the needle.” So, clearly, that spectacular catch he made on the warning track is a testament to a lot of hard work behind the scenes for the 23 year-old former top prospect.

It is an unfortunate situation for Dominguez though, especially because he just got a shot to reclaim his old job in left field and got injured after just 32 plate appearances. However, if Jones finds instant success in the Majors, the Yankees will find themselves with another “good” problem: which of them gets to stay on the roster?

About Jones

Jones continues to be one of the most physically imposing and high-upside prospects in the Yankees system. Standing at 6’7″ the left-handed outfielder has spent the early part of the 2026 season raking for AAA Scranton. Through his first 33 games this year, Jones has showcased his signature elite raw power, posting a .958 OPS with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs. One of the most notable highlights of his campaign so far came on May 3rd, when he launched a massive 117.4 mph home run off a rehabbing José Berríos, a testament to the top-tier exit velocity that has made him a fan favorite.

While his power remains his calling card, Jones has also shown progress in his overall approach at the plate. He is currently batting .258 with an .366 on-base percentage, bolstered by 18 walks in 120 at-bats. Beyond the box score, his athleticism allows him to cover significant ground in center field and remain a threat on the basepaths, already tallying 7 stolen bases this season.

Fit on the Yankees

A big part of Jones’ profile is the strikeouts. That is not the most attractive thing to most. But he can hit the ball out of the ballpark. As a lefty in Yankee Stadium, that fits very well. His stolen bases and walk rate will also fit the athletic brand of the Yankees lineup. With Dominguez and Giancarlo Stanton both on the IL with issues that might keep them down for a bit, Jones should get a decent runway of playing time to someone who just missed out on the job in spring training.
