Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony injured his wrist on Monday and will be going on the 10-day injured list, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. After a swing felt off for him, he would later leave the game against the Detroit Tigers and be sent to the clubhouse. The X-rays came back negative, but he then left the team to get a second opinion back in Boston. The diagnosis was a sprained right wrist.
Roman Anthony Injured List Stint: Details
While 10 days is a short stint, it’s still major for a player of his caliber to be placed there. Interim manager Chad Tracy told the media that they don’t expect Anthony to be there past the 10-day minimum, but it’s a precautionary move.
Chad Tracy told the media that Roman Anthony will probably land on the IL, per @alexspeier.

An IL stint is probably a good move by Tracy to get ahead of rest for two reasons. First off (although less important), the Red Sox have one day off in the next week and a half, right around the duration of the IL stint. Secondly, and more importantly, Anthony had a major injury last year to his left oblique. This oblique injury kept him out for the season at a crucial point between September and their Wild Card series against the New York Yankees. This was a huge blow to Boston, as Anthony was seen as one of the players who helped the major turnaround after being called up last season.
It’s been a weird year for Anthony. He was added to Team USA for the World Baseball Classic in March. During that tenure, he hit .280 with two home runs and seven RBI. He hit the go-ahead homer against the Dominican Republic as well in a game that sent Team USA to the championship against Venezuela. After that, expectations for his sophomore season were high, but as of now, they’re somewhat of a letdown. So far this season, Anthony is batting .229 with one homer and five RBI.
Mickey Gasper Called Up to Fill In
With Roman Anthony injured, catcher and utility infielder Mickey Gasper will be filling the roster spot over the next week. Gasper was a part of the 2024 Red Sox and had little impact. He went 0-for-23 while up at the major league level, but he managed to walk four times as well. Boston traded him to Minnesota in 2025 in the Jovani Moran trade. This past February, he was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox again.

Gasper has been great in Triple-A Worcester, batting .296 with six homers and 27 RBI. In addition to that, he also walked 25 times. He’s been seen as a guy in the organization who crushes it at Triple-A, but hasn’t seemed to translate it to MLB material. He’s in the mix of a crowded infield in Boston, including names such as Andruw Monasterio, Trevor Story, and Marcelo Mayer. So it’s unclear how much playing time he’ll receive while in the majors, but there’s hope that he can produce for this Red Sox squad that’s trying to turn it around.
The Last Word
Honestly, there’s not too much to panic about with Roman Anthony injured. He has been struggling offensively, just like most of this team was in April. While he still is a major piece of the future of this organization, it’s not an injury that keeps him out for too long during the season, so there’s less worry about this.
In terms of Gasper, as mentioned, given the crowded infield, it’s unclear what his role will be, but the hope is that he can contribute. And at the very least, it solves the outfield logjam problem that Boston has had nearly all year. Hopefully, Anthony can come back strong and hit like he was hitting when he made his debut last year.
