The New York Mets are calling up long-time veteran reliever Carl Edwards Jr. to the Majors ahead of a three-game series on Friday against the Colorado Rockies. The Athletic’s Will Sammon was first to report the news. The club has not yet confirmed this move.

After last night’s 10-8 series victory against the Minnesota Twins, the Mets were going to need a fresh arm for the bullpen. Drafted in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs, Edwards would go on to appear in 300 games out of the bullpen and counting.
Edwards, 34, is an 11-year veteran who has played for numerous teams in the past, including the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Angels, and Texas Rangers. The one-time World Series champion boasts a career 3.56 ERA and a WHIP of 1.21 in 286 career innings pitched.
The Mets signed Edwards to a minor league deal over the offseason with a plan to turn him into a starter. Edwards began the 2026 season with Triple-A Syracuse and made four starts, posting a 5.29 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Walks have been an issue for the right-hander, issuing 11 in just 17 innings of work. Edwards’ best two seasons came in 2017 with Chicago and in 2022 with Washington. In ’17, Edwards posted a dazzling 2.98 ERA in 66 1/3 IP . In ’22, he pitched to a slightly better 2.76 ERA in 62 IP.
Christian Scott Sent Down After Rough Start
To make room for Edwards on the 26-man roster, the Mets optioned Christian Scott to Triple-A Syracuse. Scott made his first start of the season on Thursday night; it wasn’t a good one. While only giving up one run, Scott walked five and hit a batter out of the 10 total Twins he faced. He lasted just 1 1/3 IP before manager Carlos Mendoza took him out.
It was the 26-year-old’s first start in Major League Baseball since July 21, 2024. When he was removed from the game due to injury. Scott later underwent Tommy John Surgery and missed the rest of 2024 and all of 2025 before finally returning in March. Before Scott’s call-up, the right-hander pitched three games in Syracuse and posted a 5.27 ERA.
