On Monday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays announced that they acquired infielder Lenyn Sosa from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league outfielder Jordan Rich and a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Sosa is in his fifth season at the big-league level, with all of those years spent in the White Sox organization. Through 12 games this season, Sosa has hit .212 with a .212 OBP and three RBI. The 26-year-old has hit three doubles and struck out seven times across his 33 at-bats.

Looking At Lenyn Sosa’s Big League Career
Over parts of five seasons, Sosa is a career .245 hitter with 37 home runs and 128 RBI. The infielder sports a career .272 OBP with a slugging percentage of .387. Sosa’s best season came last year, when he posted career highs in almost every statistical category, including 140 games played.
Over those 140 games, Sosa batted .264 with 22 home runs and 75 RBI, leading the White Sox in home runs, RBI, average, slugging, and OPS. During his time with the White Sox, Sosa has appeared in games at first base, second base, shortstop, and third base, bringing positional versatility to the Blue Jays’ roster.

Where Does Sosa Fit With The Blue Jays?
Sosa is likely to join the Blue Jays in Milwaukee as they begin a six-game road trip against the Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks. The infielder joined the 40-man roster after the Blue Jays shifted starting pitcher Shane Bieber to the 60-day injured list. The veteran starter joins newcomer Cody Ponce, who suffered an ACL sprain in his first start with the team, among Blue Jays pitchers set to miss significant time.
Toronto is adding Sosa to a crowded infield that consists of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Ernie Clement, Andrés Giménez, Kazuma Okamoto, Tyler Fitzgerald, and another utility player in Davis Schneider. Fitzgerald was acquired last week in a trade with the San Francisco Giants, but has yet to suit up for the Blue Jays.
A right-handed bat, Sosa could receive playing time against left-handed pitchers if the Blue Jays look to give Giménez a day off and shift Clement over to the shortstop position. If Sosa can find his success from a year ago, he figures to work his way into the Blue Jays’ lineup more regularly as they look for better results. Through 15 games, they are fourth in the American League East with a 6-9 record.
With normal designated hitter George Springer on the injured list with a fractured big toe, the DH position figures to be a bit of a revolving door until the Silver Slugger from a year ago returns. Toronto recalled Sosa’s former (and now current) teammate Eloy Jiménez to replace Springer, and he went 2-for-4 in his Blue Jays debut, hitting seventh and occupying the DH role. Sosa could garner some reps in this spot if his power and extra-base skills show themselves with Springer on the shelf.
