In shocking news on Thursday morning, the Milwaukee Brewers placed star outfielder Jackson Chourio, 22, on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left hand. The move was retroactive to Wednesday. Meaning Chourio won’t be eligible to return until April 4, with a two-to four-week injury timeline.
Chourio was originally hit by a pitch on March 4. But he was able to return for Venezuela’s lineup after missing the first two tournament games. After playing in the Brewers’ final two spring training games, Chourio re-injured the hand on a check swing. Resulting in the outfielder being placed on the IL.
Last season, Chourio batted .270 with 21 home runs and 78 RBI’s to go along with a .308 OBP and 21 steals in 131 games. Chourio also turned in a strong postseason. Batting .303 with two home runs and eight RBI’s in nine games.
What Now?
Replacing Chourio’s production is going to be tough for the Brewers’ offense. But this team has proven that they are resilient and have the ability to prove doubters wrong.
Switch-hitter Blake Perkins was recalled to take Chourio’s spot on the roster as a corresponding move. In 54 games last season, Perkins batted .226 with three home runs and 19 RBI’s. Perkins doesn’t have the power that Chourio possesses. But the 29-year-old has showcased an ability to steal bases, totaling 35 steals in 44 attempts over parts of three seasons.
Jake Bauers was announced to replace Chourio on Opening Day in left field. The 30-year-old is entering his third season with the Brewers and brings some power potential to the lineup. In 86 games last season, Bauers hit .235 with seven home runs and 28 RBI’s, and brings some positional versatility to the roster, having appeared at first base as well. Bauers, like Perkins, also brings some speed. Over his two seasons with the Brewers, Bauers is 21-for-23 in steal attempts.
This isn’t the Opening Day news any Brewers fan was hoping for. But the Brewers have proven the ability to pile up wins even when the cards appear to be stacked against them. With a strong rotation and bullpen, the Brewers will be tasked with keeping runs off the board until their all-star Chourio returns in April.
