New York Yankees captain and superstar Aaron Judge will go on the injured list with a right flexor strain, manager Aaron Boone told the press after Saturday’s game. The bad news is that Judge will miss at least 10 days. However, after it was announced that Judge would be out of Saturday’s lineup and would undergo testing for an injured elbow, Yankees fans held their collective breath. Now that Judge has seemingly avoided a UCL injury, they can breathe a sigh of relief.

Judge appeared to suffer the injury during the Yankees’ recent series loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. He made a slick running catch in the right field corner, but after throwing the ball back to the infield, he visibly winced. Both Judge and Boone downplayed this after that game, but he would be held out of the lineup on Saturday after he had trouble throwing in the outfield. As Yankees fans know all too well lately, such developments can indicate the worst-case scenario, a UCL injury possibly requiring Tommy John surgery. Thankfully, it won’t come to that for the perennial All-Star, at least not for now.

Despite the relatively positive news, Judge hitting the IL could not come at a worse time for the Yankees. They continue to plummet in the standings. After losing two of three in Toronto, the Philadelphia Phillies have blown them out two games in a row. New York now trails Toronto by six games in the American League East, having led them by eight games near the end of May. Now, they will be without the AL MVP frontrunner and their offensive cornerstone for close to two weeks, if not longer.
In the meantime, Aaron Judge’s injury means that Giancarlo Stanton, no stranger to injuries himself, will likely need to play the outfield again at some point. He has not done so since 2023, and he always has to be careful not to aggravate any dormant injuries or suffer new ones at this stage in his career. It will be interesting to see how the Yankees ride out Judge’s IL stint. They’ll have to avoid further injuries while preventing their skid from snowballing even further.
