Has Bo Bichette Finally Turned a Corner?

Throughout the first two months of the 2026 season, Bo Bichette has been one of the most disappointing players in baseball. Which of course, has led to the New York Mets, the team that signed Bichette in the offseason to a three-year, $126 million deal, to be one of the biggest disappointments in the league this year. A deal that does have an opt-out after this season. As the calendar entered June, many wondered when Bichette could finally turn it on as the Mets season starts to dwindle to the brink. However, since the month began, the Mets have seen the Bichette that they thought they were getting all of a sudden enter the room.

Mets news: Bo Bichette details 1 big change amid third base move

Bichette’s Early Season Struggles

Bichette’s struggles started immediately in the opening week of the season against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He recorded just one hit in that three-game series and struck out a staggering eight times. He even heard boos from the Citi Field faithful. Not the start you’re looking for when coming to a new team, especially to New York. Bichette admitted that he was trying to do too much in his debut home series. Unfortunately, for Bichette, those struggles continued at a staggering rate.

Bichette batted .219/.275/.308 through the first two months. He only had five home runs with 28 RBIs and struck out 42 times. He was chasing and losing balance a lot on swings. Perhaps even more staggering was his struggles with runners in scoring position. In his career, Bichette has been one of the best hitters in baseball in that category, and it’s one of the key reasons why the Mets brought him in after struggling to score with runners in scoring position in 2025. A big reason for their collapse and missing the playoffs one year ago. In part to Bichette not producing, the Mets offense is a league worst in both runners in scoring position again, and in OPS.

Bichette’s Turnaround

With his struggles, you had to wonder when Bichette would start to turn back to his usual self. Bichette is a good baseball player and a very good hitter, the struggles could not last the whole season, could it? As the saying goes, “check the back of the card.” The Mets have played 15 games so far in June, and they have seen Bichette finally start to hit to his ability. Entering Wednesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, Bichette had hit .362/361/.638 with an OPS of .999 in the month of June. He’s slugged three home runs and driven in 13 RBIs in that span.

The Mets salvaged the series in Cincinnati on Wednesday with a 9-1 win, and Bichette had another productive day with three hits, all of them to the opposite field. Since the beginning of the month, Bichette’s numbers have gone up to .254 batting average and a .677 OPS. He has 24 hits over the last 15 games and 14 RBIs.

Bo Bichette has 23 hits in his last 13 games.

His OPS has climbed from .570 to .675 during that timeframe.

What This Means If Bichette Has Turned It Around

Firstly, Bichette hitting would bode really well for the Mets offense. An offense that has been waiting for Bichett to hit consistently and to get hot. New York’s offense is still without Francisco Lindor, Luis Robert Jr. and Jorge Polanco due to injuries. Young players the Mets were hoping to take a step forward this year such as Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, and Mark Vientos, have struggled with consistency. Vientos has been on the bench as of late with Jared Young getting starts at first base. Then you have the developments of Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing. It would also give the Mets the one-two combo of Bichette and Juan Soto in the order that they haven’t had all year, as Soto is having another strong offensive season.

It also will help Bichette in his possible free agency. Last week, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reported that Bichette is expected to opt-out and become a free agent again. However, with the numbers he’s put up before June, he might not have been getting the money he’s looking for. For the Mets, it’s imperative for Bichette to continue this hot streak and maintain his hitting prowess the rest of the season if they have a shot to turn their season around. For Bichette, he can help the team and play to a possible new contract.
