The San Diego Padres made a pair of roster moves on Friday afternoon. They placed veteran shortstop Xander Bogaerts on the 10-day injured list with a left foot fracture. While he’s only on the 10-day IL, he will likely miss the rest of the regular season, but he could return in October. In a corresponding move, they recalled infielder Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso.

Bogaerts suffered a non-displaced fracture when he fouled a ball off his foot in Wednesday’s game against the Seattle Mariners. While he finished the at-bat, he was not penciled into the lineup on Friday preceding the team’s announcement.
The 32-year-old is in the third season of his 11-year, $280 million megadeal with the Padres. So far, San Diego is not getting as much bang for their buck as they hoped, due to a mix of injury and underperformance from the shortstop. While his numbers with the Padres have not been disastrous, they represent a steep dropoff from where he was with the Boston Red Sox. While he had multiple seasons in Beantown hitting over .300, along with multiple 20+ homer and 100+ RBI campaigns, Bogaerts has yet to eclipse any of those figures with the Padres. In 131 games this season, he is slashing .262/.330/.387 with 10 home runs, 49 RBI, 29 doubles, and a 98 OPS+.
McCoy, a 30-year-old infielder, has had cups of coffee at the major league level for the last three seasons. A sixth-round draft pick in 2017 by the Baltimore Orioles, he played briefly in 2023 with the Toronto Blue Jays and the last two years with the Padres. He had his first 10 career hits (including two doubles) and three RBI last season. This year, McCoy is 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in the majors.
