.According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the San Diego Padres are reportedly eyeing a trade for the Boston Red Sox’s Jarren Duran. This is the second time the Padres have shown interest in adding Duran. They were previously rumored to be targeting the outfielder before the 2024 season.
A difficult June schedule could amplify multiple needs, but the Padres are again showing interest in Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, sources tell @TheAthletic. San Diego’s hole in left field was obvious before Gavin Sheets crashed into a wall: https://t.co/nsQSMvyQGv

Padres in Need of Outfield Help
The Padres, who currently sit in second place in the National League West at 33-24, have struggled to get production from their left fielders. Through the first 50 games of the season, their left fielders combined for -0.7 bWAR, and have dealt with countless injuries at the position. Jason Heyward has gone on the injured list twice this season, and the club sent Connor Joe to the Reds after playing only seven games.
When Heyward went down on May 25th, the Padres figured they would turn to Brandon Lockridge and Gavin Sheets to fill the void. Sheets is having a career year in his first season in San Diego, but he collided with the outfield wall last night and needs evalutation for head, wrist, and hip injuries.
Padres Reportedly Eyeing Jarren Duran from Red Sox
With Sheets seemingly heading to the I.L., the Padres are now reportedly targeting Jarren Duran. Duran had a breakout season in 2024, totaling 8.7 WAR and finishing eighth in the American League MVP race. So far in 2025, Duran hasn’t been able to return to his form from last year, but he is still hitting .265 with four home runs and 44 RBI.
The Red Sox are off to a bad start at 29-32, and currently sit fourth in the A.L. East. They have the No. 1 prospect in baseball, Roman Anthony, waiting in the wings for a spot to open up in the outfield, so moving Duran could be their path to getting Anthony playing time.
Duran is under team control until 2028. He is only being paid $3.75 million this season, so the Padres may not be the only team looking to add him if the Red Sox continue to struggle. If they can strike a deal, an outfield trio of Duran, Jackson Merrill, and Fernando Tatis Jr. will be among the league’s best.
