Report: Padres Exploring Trade Market for Left Field Help

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the San Diego Padres are reportedly looking at the trade market for an upgrade in left field. Jason Heyward was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain. Luis Campusano was recalled in place of Heyward. Through their first 50 games, the Padres’ left fielders have been the worst in all of baseball, combining for a -0.7 bWAR.

Padres Left Fielders Off to a Rough Start

After getting an unexpected All-Star season from Jurickson Profar in 2024, the Padres let him walk and settled for a cheaper option. They signed Jayson Heyward and Connor Joe to inexpensive contracts after Profar left, but neither has been worth the deals they were given.

Heyward dealt with an inflamed knee at the beginning of the season and has hit .176 in 95 at-bats this year, while Joe was traded to the Cincinnati Reds after playing in seven games for the club.

With Heyward again landing on the injured list, the Padres will look to Tyler Wade and Brandon Lockridge to split time in left field as they search for an upgrade. Gavin Sheets could also see time in the position, although his defense leaves much to be desired.

Padres Looking for Left Field Upgrade Through Trade Market

Although the trade deadline is still months away, the Padres could already be searching for a new left fielder. There will seemingly be plenty of options available by July. Players on teams already in favor of selling may be available now.

If the Padres want to move soon, they could look at one of the Chicago White Sox outfielders in hopes they can improve their production in San Diego. Andrew Benintendi is the best the Sox offer, but Austin Slater and Michael A. Taylor could be risks the club is willing to take.

If they are willing to wait, the struggling Baltimore Orioles may sell at the trade deadline, seemingly making Cedric Mullins and Ryan O’Hearn available. A reunion with Tommy Pham could also be in play if the Pittsburgh Pirates feel they can get a good return.
