Ha-Seong Kim Joins Rays on Two-Year Contract with Opt-Out

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, infielder Ha-Seong Kim signed a new contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. The terms of the deal have been reported as a two-year, $29 million contract with an opt-out. Kim has been an integral part of the San Diego Padres since his MLB debut in April 2021. He has consistently demonstrated his skills at second base, shortstop, and third base. This versatility has made him a valuable asset to the team.

As a result, Kim has been a key contributor to the Padres’ success. He has provided a steady presence in the infield and made impactful plays on offense and defense.

Ha-Seong Kim Lands with Rays on Short-Term Deal

Kim, who declined his portion of an $8 million mutual option to become a free agent, underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, wiping out any hope he had of returning for San Diego’s postseason run.

Kim’s impressive defensive skills were on full display this past season. He played 121 games at shortstop and recorded +4 Outs Above Average, +2 Defensive Runs Saved, and +7.2 Fielding Runs Above Average. Kim’s exceptional infield defense has been a hallmark of his game, solidifying his reputation as a well-above-average defender. Kim has been a consistent hitter during his four seasons with the Padres. He has posted a .242/.326/.380 batting line. The 2023 season was a standout campaign for Kim. He won the National League Gold Glove Award as a utility player and received down-ballot MVP votes.

Despite the shoulder concerns that cut his season short, Kim’s overall body of work has cemented his value as a versatile and talented infielder. His exceptional defense, consistency at the plate and impressive accolades make him a valuable asset to the Rays. As Kim embarks on the next chapter in his career, he is well-positioned to continue making significant contributions with Tampa Bay.
