Padres Make Room for New Addition, Designate Veteran for Assignment

The San Diego Padres designated left-hander Jackson Wolf for assignment on Wednesday. The roster move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Carl Edwards Jr. San Diego optioned right-hander Alek Jacob to Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move.

Wolf, 25, was reacquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in April after being designated for assignment and has posted a 7.21 ERA this season at Triple-A El Paso. Wolf has shown some swing-and-miss ability in the past. It’s possible there will be interest from other clubs whether it’s a trade or waivers.

Wolf was in his second stint with the Padres. He went to the Pirates at the 2023 trade deadline as part of the return for Rich Hill and Jiman Choi. Pittsburgh designated Wolf earlier this year but wound up on the Pirates again after a trade for minor leaguer Kervin Pichardo.

The Padres signed Edwards to a minor league contract on July 5. It’s his second stint in the Padres organization, after first playing for San Diego in the second half of the 2019 season following a trade from the Chicago Cubs. The 2019 season saw a drastic change in Edwards’ career, as he has since bounced around to six different organizations. One of them was another return to the Cubs on a minor league deal this past offseason.

Edwards had a 1.85 ERA over 24 1/3 innings for Triple-A Iowa but Chicago released him from that contract in mid-June. Even though the Cubs were hit hard by bullpen injuries, Edwards’ 14.6 percent walk rate might have been enough hesitation to bring him up to the majors.

Edwards, 32, had three strong seasons as a member of the Cubs’ bullpen from 2016-18. However, he stumbled to an 8.47 ERA over innings with the Cubs and Padres in 2019. Despite his journeyman status, Edwards put up solid numbers over the last two years with the Washington Nationals. He posted a 2.76 ERA in 62 innings in 2022 and a 3.69 ERA in 31 2/3 innings in 2023. It has been over a year since Edwards last pitched in a major league game.
