Mariners 4, Rangers 3
ARLINGTON, Texas, June 3 — On a rainy night in Arlington, fans eventually went home dry, but disappointed as they saw the Texas Rangers lose to the Seattle Mariners by a final score of 4–3. Despite a home run by first baseman Nathaniel Lowe that gave the Rangers the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, they just ran out of steam going forward. The middle game of this series is on Saturday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 3:05 PM Central. Left-hander Marco Gonzalez (3–5, 3.55 ERA) will make the start for Seattle. Glenn Otto (3–2, 4.33 ERA) will toe the slab for the Rangers.
Rangers’ Offense
It was touch and go for the Rangers all night on Friday. It seemed like they had men on base on more than a few instances leading up to the sixth inning. That’s when they got on the board for the first time. An RBI double by Corey Seager drove in Marcus Semien to make the score 2–1. At that point, the score tilted in the Mariners’ favor, but it didn’t stay that way for long. Two batters later, Kole Calhoun doubled in the tying run. That run was represented by Seager.
The Rangers got their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lowe’s fifth home run of the year put the Rangers on top 3–2. It was a welcomed sight to the fans, but that is where it would stop for the Rangers. They were hoping that this momentum would carry over into Saturday afternoon’s contest, but it was not to be. That is the nice thing about baseball, however. There is always the next game to play.
Mariners’ Offense
The game stayed scoreless up until the top of the fourth inning. Mariners’ third baseman Eugenio Suarez hit a sacrifice fly to allow Ty France to score. At that point, it put the Mariners ahead by a score of 1–0. The Mariners’ next run came an inning later. In the top of the fifth inning, catcher Cal Raleigh hit a home run to right field to stretch their lead to 2–0. Seattle trailed 3–2 in the top of the ninth, and Rangers’ fans were getting loud at this point. They were silenced, however, when Suarez stepped up to the plate once again. He hit a two-run blast that put the Mariners ahead by a score of 4–3. ‘
Rangers Pitching Notes
The Rangers gave the starting nod to Dane Dunning on Friday evening. He pitched well over seven innings. He gave up two runs, both were earned, on three hits. One of those hits was the home run to Raleigh in the top of the fifth inning. He didn’t walk anyone, and he struck out seven Mariners. Righty Matt Bush pitched the eighth inning for Texas. He surrendered one hit, and struck out two. Joe Barlow came in to pitch the ninth inning, and got the losing decision for the Rangers. He gave up a walk, two runs, and two hits. His record for 2022 now sits at 1–1 with an ERA of 2.45.
Righty Penn Murfee got the win for the Mariners. His record is now 1–0 with an ERA of 1.02. He came on in relief in the bottom of the eighth inning. He allowed one hit, and struck out two. Paul Sewald got third save of the year for Seattle. He tossed one inning. He walked one, and struck out two.
