Rangers Agree to Contracts with Isaiah Kiner-Falefa, Joey Gallo

Isiah Kiner-Falefa

In an offseason full of numerous trades and signings, the Texas Rangers have also managed to hold on to two of their mainstays. The team announced on Friday that they have come to terms on new contracts with Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Joey Gallo to avoid arbitration. Each new deal is for one year. While the Rangers have not confirmed the contract specifics, it is believed that Kiner-Falefa will earn $2 million. As for Gallo, his deal is for $6.2 million for the 2021 season.

Hot Corner

The Rangers were anxious to bring back Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The young third baseman really made an impact for the team as he won his first career Gold Glove at the five spot in 2020. Kiner-Falefa won ahead of third base finalists Gio Urshela of the New York Yankees, and Yoan Moncada of the Chicago White Sox. At the plate, he hit .280, leading the club in hits with 59, runs with 28, and total bases with 78. Along with the Gold Glove, Kiner-Falefa was also named the Rangers’ 2020 Player of the Year.

Outfield Power

Another priority for the Rangers was the return of Joey Gallo. Like Kiner-Falefa, Gallo is also coming off a Gold Glove season. As a side note, Kiner-Falefa and Gallo are the first Rangers to win Gold Gloves since first baseman Mitch Moreland and third baseman Adrian Beltre in 2016. Gallo beat out right field finalists Clint Frazier of the Yankees, and Anthony Santander of the Baltimore Orioles. In 57 games in 2020, Gallo hit .180 with ten home runs, and 26 RBI. He also lead the Rangers in walks with 29, and extra-base hits with 18.

2021 Season

With these two pieces placed firmly in the puzzle, the Rangers are hoping that good things will come in 2021. Add in the other moves that they have made this offseason, and they are primed to be a team to pay close attention to come Opening Day.
