Cincinnati Reds acquire Angels Outfielder Brian Goodwin

Brian Goodwin

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cincinnati Reds have traded for Los Angeles Angels outfielder Brian Goodwin just in time for the 4:00 PM deadline on Monday.

In return, the Angels will receive left-handed pitcher Packy Naughton and a player to be named later. The Reds acquired pitcher, Riley O’Brien on Friday, but the move to get Goodwin should have more of an impact. Goodwin has had a decent season thus far, as he is hitting .242 with four home runs in 30 games played. After this season, Goodwin will enter arbitration and will become an unrestricted free agent in 2023.

Reds Add Outfield Depth

In just over one full season worth of games, 166, in his past two season with the Angels, Brian Goodwin has batted .258 with over 20 home runs. Goodwin provides great depth for the Reds. After Nick Senzel was placed on the injured list for undisclosed reasons, the Reds have been a bit thin in the outfield. Jesse Winker has had a breakout 2020 season, but is at designated hitter, with some starts in left field. Shogo Akiyama has struggled thus far as he is batting just .202 with 22 strikeouts to just ten walks. In right field, Nicholas Castellanos‘s bat will remain in the lineup, but Goodwin could fit right in with rookie outfielder Mark Payton also in the mix.

One flaw for Goodwin is his strikeouts, as he has struck out 164 times in the last two seasons. In addition to a solid offensive output, Goodwin provides solid speed and defense, which date back to his days with the Washington Nationals.

Angels Continue Their Sale At Deadline

Packy Naughton, a 24-year old starter, had a 3.32 ERA in the minors last season across Single-A and Double-A. According to MLB.com, he is the 14th-ranked prospect in the Reds farm system. In 2019, Naughton was the minor league starter of the year for the Reds. He should add depth to a weak Angels farm system that is headlined by Jo Adell.

The Angels have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball. They are just 12-23 and in last place in the AL West. After signing Anthony Rendon, the expectations were high for the Angels, but they have faltered leading to a sale at the deadline. Earlier, the Angels traded catcher Jason Castro and infielder Tommy La Stella. Although the Angels did not trade a pitcher like Dylan Bundy, they did make trades to shed some salary by trading rentals like Castro.
