Atlanta Braves Acquire Tommy Milone

Braves Acquire Tommy Milone

The Atlanta Braves have acquired starting pitcher Tommy Milone from the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles received two players to be named later. In another transaction, the Braves have designated Matt Adams for assignment. That move was made to make room for Milone on the Braves roster.

Tommy Milone’s Career

Tommy Milone has a career record of 51-51 with an ERA of 3.99 and a WHIP of 1.261. In 904 innings Milone has struck out 679 batters and allowed 150 home runs. The 10-year veteran pitcher will be joining his eighth organization.

Milone started as a Washington National in 2011. He spent two and a half seasons with the Oakland Athletics where he had his best success. From there he spent two and a half seasons with the Minnesota Twins. Then in 2017, he split the season between the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers. In 2018 he went back to Washington before pitching with the Seattle Mariners in 2019. This year he made six starts with the surprising Orioles.

Braves Outlook

The Braves need starting pitching as most teams do. Mike Soroka tore his ACL earlier in the season and besides Max Fried, every other Braves starting pitcher has struggled. Off-season acquisition Cole Hamels has yet to pitch in a game and young pitchers like Touki Toussaint and Kyle Wright have struggled.

Despite the pitching struggles going into Sunday’s game the Braves are 18-14 and have a two-game lead in the very close National League Eastern Division. In fact, the entire National League is wide open with only the Pittsburgh Pirates not in contention. With the newly expanded playoff format, this is a trade that can ensure the Braves are one of the eight teams to make the playoffs.

Tommy Milone is not a great pitcher but he is capable of delivering quality starts each time out. Additionally, with so many other teams looking for starting pitching, the Braves struck first and solidified their rotation. Milone is a pitcher that could certainly help other teams. Milone was 1-4 with a 3.99 ERA and a 1.281 WHIP in six starts this season.
