Sean Newcomb Optioned After Rough Start

Sean Newcomb

Mark Bowman of MLB.com has reported that Atlanta Braves left-handed starter Sean Newcomb has been sent to the team’s alternate site in Gwinnett. Newcomb started Monday’s 13-8 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. His night was over almost as quickly as it began. He totaled 1 1/3 innings, giving up six hits, eight earned runs, walking two, and striking out one. With those totals, he has now given up 17 earned runs in 13 2/3 innings of work this year. His ERA skyrocketed to 11.20.

In his postgame interview, manager Brian Snitker remained positive about Newcomb. He stated that the team would “need him” later in the season and spoke encouragingly of his past work. The skipper also said that Newcomb might be placed in the bullpen upon returning to the team. He did well in relief work for the team last year, however, his days as a starter might be numbered. According to Bowman, Newcomb has recorded 41 outs during his four starts this season. By contrast, Max Fried has recorded 68 outs in four starts.

The Braves acquired Sean Newcomb in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels back in 2015. In return for Newcomb, right-handed pitcher Chris Ellis, and shortstop Erick Aybar, the team sent catcher/first baseman Jose Briceno and shortstop Andrelton Simmons to Los Angeles. Since then, Newcomb has gone 22-23 with a 4.16 ERA and allowed 318 hits, 160 earned runs, 40 homers, and 173 walks in 346 innings. He has also struck out 343 and saved a game. His career ERA+ is 103, though this year, he has only posted a 42. Last year, his ERA+ was 145.

In his place, the Braves have called up young right-hander Bryse Wilson. He made his big league debut with the team in 2018 and has posted a 7.00 ERA in nine career starts. His biggest success at the big league level came in his first game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He went five innings and allowed no runs on three hits while walking three and striking out five. The Braves are hoping for the same kind of production from him during his new stint in the big leagues.
