Johnny Cueto To Stay In San Francisco

As first reported by Jon Heyman of Fanrag Sports, Johnny Cueto, the veteran pitcher and World Series champion, has decided to stay with the San Francisco Giants and not opt out of his deal. His remaining deal goes for four-years, totaling $84 million.

Cueto’s Career

Johnny Cueto would start his career with the Cincinnati Reds in 2008 and play with the Reds for an astounding eight years. In that time, Cueto would become a fan favorite in Cincinnati. In terms of his baseball, Cueto would be named to an All-Star game in 2014 during his time with the Reds. During his time with the Reds, his stats included a 3.21 ERA with 1,505 strikeouts in 1,339 innings pitched. At the 2015 trade deadline, Cueto was traded to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for pitchers Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed. During his time in Kansas City, Cueto became a World Series champion, when the Royals beat the New York Mets in five games.

After winning the title with Kansas City, Cueto would go west and sign a six-year contract with the Giants. During his time in San Francisco so far, Cueto was named to another All-Star game in 2016. In his career, Cueto has a 3.33 ERA with 1,505 strikeouts in 1,787.1 innings pitched.

What This Means

For the Giants, this means that in the summer, they don’t have to go scrambling for Cueto’s replacement in the rotation. And Cueto has more than paid off so far in terms of his contract. With stats such as a 3.48 ERA, 334 strikeouts, and a record of 26-13, Cueto is showing why he is a two time All-Star and a World Series champion.

For the free agent market, the pitching market gets smaller but is still star studded. With pitchers like Jake Arrieta, Yu Darvish, and Wade Davis on the market, teams can still get their star pitcher. But for Cueto, he will continue to help San Francisco return to the glory of a World Series title.
