It was a surprise that Reed ended up on the trade block; as the injury to Jeurys Familia opened the door for Reed to have more of a permanent role in New York. His recent performance as a closer hurt his trade value, but Reed has posted a 2.57 ERA with 8.8 K/9 while having only walked 1.1 BB/9 this season. Reed has seen success in the Mets bullpen,  posting a 2.43 FIP, which is the fourth best in the league. As well as posting the sixth best WAR which is 3.5.

Several teams had interest in the 28-year old Mets reliever, but Boston seemed like the best fit. The Red Sox have seen injuries hurt their bullpen with pitchers Joe Kelly, Tyler Thornburg, Carson Smith, and Robbie Ross Jr. all going on the DL.

The Mets acquire pitching prospects Jaime Callahan, Gersan Bautista, and Stephen Nogosk. Nogosk, who is the Red Sox’s 18th best prospect, posted a combined 3.25 ERA with a 10.5 K/9 and  a 3.5 BB/9 in his two seasons with Boston’s minor league system. Callahan has spent six years in the Boston’s minor league system and has posted a 4.79 ERA with a 8.7 K/9 and a 4.1 BB/9. Callahan is ranked as the 23rd best prospect in Boston’s system. Bautista who has spent four seasons in the Boston Red Sox system is ranked as the 28th best Red Sox prospect. Bautista has posted a 2.79 ERA  with a 4.1 BB/9 and a 7.5 K/9.

Reed has collected 48 strike outs in 48 games, and has only walked six. During Familia’s absence, Reed has collected 19 saves. The former Mets reliever will be the set up man for hard throwing right hander Craig Kimbrel. Reed will be a free agent at the end of the 2017 season.
