Drew Waters 2017 MLB Draft Profile

Drew Waters 2017 MLB Draft Profile

East Cobb baseball travel teams have produced many professional players over the past decades. They have included the likes of Jason Heyward, Brian McCann, Adam Everett, Jeff Francoeur, and many others. The year-round baseball allows these players to learn and play against many different levels of competition, providing more experience than other teams across Georgia. Drew Waters might be the next athlete in that long line to become a professional baseball player. Drew Waters compares favorably to many East Cobb players before him.

Overview

Waters is an 18-year-old senior from Etowah High School in Woodstock, Georgia. Already committed to the University of Georgia, Waters hopes he can skip college and be a first-round draft pick this summer. At 6’1”, 166 pounds, he has room to gain muscle and add power to his swing. During his senior season at Etowah H.S., Waters hit .494, with 13 home runs and 14 steals. These numbers are great, and as a switch-hitter, they are even better.

Strengths

Waters has many plus attributes as a prospect. Being a switch-hitter with the ability to hit for average and power he displays is a huge plus. He has a good arm and has the ability to play either center field or right field at the major league level. He shows good power and plate discipline from the left side of the plate, as he only had 18 strikeouts last season in 32 games. In addition, he has great speed; he ran a 6.69 60-yard dash and stole the 14 bases in only 17 attempts.

Weaknesses

Waters has many strengths, but he also has a few weaknesses as well. In the right-handed batter’s box, Waters does not display as much power as he does from the left. He tends to hit more line drives to all fields than home runs. He also needs to put on about 20 to 25 pounds of muscle. While he puts up great numbers in high school, the extra weight will allow him to generate more power and be more durable during the course of a professional baseball season.

Player Comparison

Waters compares to Dexter Fowler at the Major League level.
