Toronto FC could win ninth Voyageurs Cup at BC Place on Tuesday

PREVIEW – Toronto FC could win their second Voyageurs Cup on Tuesday evening as they face the Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. Both teams are entering this game in very different moods based on previous games.

Toronto FC could win two Voyageurs Cup trophies in one year

Toronto FC

Toronto FC could win their second Voyageurs Cup. They are well on their way as they got an important 4-0 victory over Charlotte FC. This win ended TFC’s five-game winless run in MLS play.

The road to the Canadian Championship for TFC started at Wanderers Grounds. They struggled in the first half but scored the first two goals in the second half and ended up winning the game 2-1. They then dominated CF Montreal, by scoring four goals in a 4-0 win at BMO Field.

This is what TFC head coach, Bob Bradley, said about the win according to Toronto FC:

“A really good start, everybody was excited,” began Bob Bradley post-match. “You could see, in a short amount of time, that there’s a good way that players connect on the field. And the more guys that connect, the more ideas that are going fast, the better the football gets.”

He also talked about the contributions of Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi, who made their debuts on Saturday:

“Lorenzo is so sharp, he’s a smart guy, you’re managing his minutes, but he knows how to manage himself. What you see is just how quick he sizes up different moments. Federico has quality, also works. Great to see.”

Insigne assisted on Bradley’s second goal. It was a terrific assist as his flick pass to Bradley looked effortless. Furthermore, Bernardeschi assisted on Bradley’s first goal and scored a terrific goal from long-range. Expect both or at least one of these players to play a big difference against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Tuesday night.

Toronto FC’s best players

The only player to score more than one goal for TFC in the Canadian Championship is currently Ayo Akinola. He scored two of the four goals en route to defeating Canadian Classique rivals, CF Montreal, at BMO Field.

In terms of the MLS season, Jesús Jiménez leads the team with eight goals. This is closely followed by Jonathan Osorio with six goals. Osorio currently leads the team with six assists while Alejandro Pozuelo is in second place with five assists.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC are coming into the Canadian Championship after a disappointing 3-1 loss to the Chicago Fire FC at home. It was a disappointing game for Vancouver. This is what their head coach, Vanni Sartini said about the loss according to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC YouTube Account:

“I don’t know, maybe, I don’t know. Tonight was our worst performance I think of the season, and we take full ownership. I take full ownership of the not-good performance. The distance between lines always too big was too easy for them to play.”

Despite the Whitecaps being the home team, Chicago had double the shots that Vancouver had. Yes, Chicago had four shots on goal while Vancouver had three on target, but it shows that Vancouver can be vulnerable.

This is what Whitecaps head coach, Sartini, said about the game:

“I think it’s the best scenario. We don’t have to cry too much or overthink what we what we do. Tomorrow morning, we go at it, we have to the training session to prepare the game, being very focused on the game again.”

In terms of the MLS season, Lucas Cavallini leads the team with seven goals while both Ryan Gauld and Brian White are second with three goals each. Gauld currently leads the team in assists with five while both Cristian Dájome is tied with three assists each.

Road to the 2022 Canadian Championship Final and top Vancouver Whitecaps FC players

The road to the 2022 Canadian Championship Final for the Whitecaps started in the preliminary round. A large part of that was getting eliminated by Pacific FC last year in the Canadian Championship. They were able to comfortably dispatch Valour FC from Winnipeg by a score of 2-0. They would then face Cavalry FC in the quarterfinals at ATCO Field in Spruce Meadows. Of the three games Vancouver has played, this was by far the toughest.

The Cavs went up by a goal thanks to Myer Bevan in the 72-minute. However, the Whitecaps created their own luck, which resulted in Daan Klomp committing an own goal. This resulted in the game going into penalties, a game in which Vancouver won via penalties.

The last game took place on June 22. York put up a valiant effort at BC Place. Unfortunately for York though, the Whitecaps had more possession and double the shots on goal than York United. This resulted in Brian White scoring two goals (the only player to score more than one goal for the Whitecaps in the Canadian Championship this year).

Toronto FC could win the 2022 Voyageurs Cup against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Prediction: Vancouver Whitecaps 1, Toronto FC 2

TFC could win the 2022 Voyageurs Cup at BMO Field. However, it is going to be a test on the road against the Whitecaps. If TFC is to win the Voyageurs Cup, Insigne and Bernardeschi will need to step up for the team. It will not be easy on the road. They have not won an MLS game on the road this year. One of the games where they had a chance to win was their 2-1 loss at BC Place against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

The Whitecaps will look to win their first Voyageurs Cup since 2015 while TFC looks to win their ninth Voyageurs Cup. The game will happen on Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. ET at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. It will also be televised live on OneSoccer.
