Sporting KC Take Care of Orlando City in Dom Dwyer Return

Sporting KC

Kansas City, Kan. – On a night where most of the focus was on Dom Dwyer’s return to Kansas City, Sporting KC were focused on the business at hand. Felipe Gutierrez scored his first goal for the team since March 31st, leading Sporting to a 1-0 victory.

Sporting KC Defeat Orlando City SC 1-0

Dom Dwyer’s trade left Sporting KC in a bit of a lurch in the attack last season. Now on pace to surpass the club record for goals in a season, Sporting KC have been well off without him. A victory against Orlando would put them into second place in the Western Conference, and just a point behind F.C. Dallas for first. And they sure took care of business on Saturday night.

The scoreline might not reflect the dominance on the night for Sporting, but it was one-way traffic for 90 minutes. Sporting KC had Orlando pinned into their own defensive block for a large portion of the match. They sent in 20 crosses in the first half, much to no avail. The scoreless first half again not indicative of Sporting’s dominance. But, less than ten minutes into the second half, Sporting KC found their breakthrough.

Yohan Croizet played his best game, and was one of Sporting’s most creative and influential players in the match. He made a run down the right flank in the 53rd minute, and sent a pass back across the top of the box to Felipe Gutierrez. Gutierrez placed his shot to perfection, making it 1-0 to Sporting KC. That lone goal was enough for victory.

Croizet’s performance was strong on the right, making that the one place he’s played this year where he’s been incredibly dangerous and influential for a whole game. He timed his runs to perfection, and Orlando’s backline couldn’t do a whole lot to keep him quiet.

Sporting KC will travel to San Jose next Saturday to face the last place Earthquakes, while Orlando City will host the Chicago Fire on Sunday.
