CARSON, CALIF. (December 18, 2017) – The rumors turned out to be true. The California Clasico rivals have made a trade. The LA Galaxy acquire goalkeeper David Bingham in exchange for $100,000 in General and Targeted Allocation Money each ($200,000 total) from San Jose Earthquakes.

Bingham has spent his entire career professionally with San Jose. He joined the club in 2011 as a Generations Adidas player out of UC Berkeley. He did have a short loan stint with Norwegian side Strømmen IF. He made the MLS All-Star game in 2016. Bingham has been a dark horse for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in years past.
Bingham was called up for the United States Men’s National Team on several occasions. He has three caps and made his debut in February 2016. He has yet to play in a competitive international match.
The 28-year-old played 96 games for the Earthquakes, early 27 clean sheets. He had been the primary starter for the last three years, but had a fall out after the coaching change earlier this year for San Jose. It was clear going into the playoffs that the organization had moved on from him and he would not be the starter in 2018.
Bingham comes to the LA Galaxy as the expected starter for 2018. He’s a proven starter in MLS and the change of scenery could do him some good. Getting traded to a rival could light a fire under him as well.
The Galaxy got a decent starter in MLS who can be in the conversation for Goalkeeper of the Year. And they did so for a reasonable price as well. We’ll have to see how he does in 2018.
