Preview: AEW Dynamite – 30 Years of Jericho (10/7/20)

Jericho AEW Dynamite

This week’s AEW Dynamite pays special tribute to a man who has truly revolutionized wrestling over the last three decades. Now, in his 30th year as a pro wrestler, Chris Jericho has done and seen it all. He’s a legend in this business and on Wednesday night, AEW will be celebrating his accomplishments, his legacy, and all he’s meant to wrestling over his 30 year-plus career. While Jericho will be the focus on Wednesday night, there is much more in store of this episode of Dynamite as well. Three championships will be on the line as Brian Cage defends his FTW title against Will Hobbs, FTR put their belts on the line in yet another “Brush with Greatness” challenge, this time against TH2, and finally, Cody challenges Mr. Brodie Lee for the TNT Championship in AEW’s first-ever dog collar match. Plus, Serena Deeb takes on Big Swole and Jericho will team with Jake Hager to face Chaos Project.

It’s a night for celebration and you won’t want to miss a moment of the action.

Big Swole vs Serena Deeb

A few weeks ago, AEW announced that the longtime veteran, Serena Deeb, was All Elite. Now, Deeb will have her first opportunity as a contracted wrestler on AEW Dynamite when she takes on a crowd favorite in Big Swole. Both Swole and Deeb are coming off victories in their last time out, defeating opponents on AEW DARK. It’s still early to say certainly but there is no doubt both of these women will soon be seeking out the top spot in the division, which currently belongs to champ, Hikaru Shida. With the women’s title within their grasp, both Deeb and Swole will look to keep up their winning ways on Wednesday night.

Brian Cage vs Will Hobbs

Last week, Will Hobbs, another recently signed All Elite wrestler, was meant to have his Wednesday Night Dynamite debut. But as they say in wrestling, card subject to change. Hobbs’ planned six-man tag alongside Darby Allin and Jon Moxley turned into a Moxley title defense against Eddie Kingston. So Hobbs had to wait a week to get his hands on Brian Cage. This Wednesday, these two powerhouses will go at it. The match should be a great opportunity for Hobbs to showcase the talent he’s been demonstrating week in and week out on AEW DARK. As for Cage, the big man came into AEW on a tear but recent losses have set him back a little as far as his place in the world championship picture. Cage will have to be careful though if he doesn’t want to lose his other title, the FTW Championship. Tonight marks the first-time ever the title will be defended on Dynamite and Hobbs will not be an easy out. Look for these two to have a classic big man match full of impressive power moves from both guys.

Mr. Brodie Lee vs Cody

Cody was the reigning, defended, undisputed (and undefeated while we’re at it), TNT Champion, the only such one in history…Until he wasn’t. Mr. Brodie Lee made quick work of Cody in a match that the new champ desperately needed. It was unequivocally a rout and one that Cody had to spend weeks off recovering. But the American Nightmare is back in black and ready to regain the championship he defended nearly every week. But with the Nightmare Family and the Dark Order certain to play a role here, Lee made Cody a very unique challenge. For the first time in AEW, there will be a dog collar match. Somewhat of a rare stipulation in wrestling, especially of late, this match will see Lee and Cody with dog collars tied around their necks that connect to the other person. With Lee and Cody unable to escape the other, it should make any outside interference less likely as well.

Chris Jericho and Jake Hager vs Chaos Project

The man of the hour had this match specially planned as Chris Jericho has known LUTHER for nearly all 30 years of his career. It was Jericho who got LUTHER in AEW as well. On Wednesday, Jericho will get his partner in Jake Hager and LUTHER will join with his in Serpentico, for a tag team match honoring Jericho’s exceptional career. While it seems obvious that Jericho and Hager are the favorites, it is worth noting that LUTHER and Serpentico are undefeated in their brief time as a team. This will be their Dynamite debut, and really, anything could happen. Whether Jericho ends the night the victor or with his back flat on the mat, one thing is certain, this will be a match worthy of the celebration that is in store to honor his 30 years in the business.

FTR vs TH2

FTR consider themselves greatness personified so for the past several weeks, Cash and Dax have been putting their money where their mouths are. The two have instituted these Brush with Greatness series of challenges allowing any team to get a title opportunity, even in some cases jumping the ranking lines. This week, TH2’s Angelico and Jack Evans will get their opportunity despite wrestling just a handful of matches this year. The duo returned to the company following a COVID hiatus earlier this summer and have looked good in their return. Now, they’ll get a chance to really test themselves against AEW’s tag team measuring sticks. Cash and Dax have been dominant ever since stepping foot in AEW. The two continue to be undefeated in traditional tag team action. Perhaps that streak will come to an end this week on AEW Dynamite?
