Not long after NJPW made it’s return we began to see videos hyping up the debut of The Grandmaster. Speculation immediately swept the fanbase with many expecting it to be returning young lion Hirai Kawato who had spent his excursion in CMLL. On today’s New Japan Cup show it was revealed that renamed Master Wato was indeed the grand master.

It wasn’t long before we got some sense of Wato’s direction going forward as he was attacked by Suzuki Gun member DOUKI who is a junior heavyweight, signaling that Wato will be part of NJPW junior heavyweight division. It would appear that Wato’s debut will be against DOUKI, presumably at Dominion. That should serve as a good tune up win for Wato to show off his skills with the heavily Lucha influenced DOUKI.
It is yet unknown what faction Master Wato will find himself in, it’s likely he joins up with the combined CHAOS/Taguchi Japan babyface stable.
