SmackDown Highlights – Braun Strowman Finally Wins Gold (1/31/20)

Smackdown

This was no ordinary week of Friday Night WWE action this week. It was time for the first-ever (maybe?) Super SmackDown on FOX. To be followed up with this Sunday’s upcoming Super Bowl, it was time to be super. With this being the first show for the blue brand since the Royal Rumble, they had to do their absolute best to make a splash. In a show that can be described a good effort, the highlights were there for the picking. So without further ado, here are the highlights from the final SmackDown of January.

Morrison, Miz Move On To Super Showdown

Smackdown

Now listen, this ain’t no make believe. No, seriously. Over a decade after they formed and became tag team champions, they have that shot all over again. It was a four-way tag team match to decide the number one contender for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. You got Heavy Machinery, The Lucha House Party, the agitated Revival, and of course John Morrison and The Miz. And it was a solid match overall, as it seemed that Heavy Machinery would actually walk out with the W. That was not the case. Some good tag teaming by the oldest tag team of the group led to a Starship Pain by Morrison to get the win and move on to Super Showdown to face The New Day. Oh, and even bigger news. “The Dirt Sheet” returns NEXT week.

Otis Gets His Peach On Valentine’s Day

It’s all happening. The best story SmackDown has seen the past number of months is the quiet love angle between Otis and his peach, Mandy Rose. Otis has done everything and anything to make sure Rose is supported and she knows it. The Royal Rumble save was the ultimate step. Now, it was time for Otis to ask the big question. He’d finally ask her on a date for next Friday. She said she had plans, decimating the hearts of fans everywhere. But then, hope returned when she said she’s free the week after. Valentine’s Day. So it’s official. Love may truly be real everyone. Otis is the true everyman.

SmackDown MVP: Braun Strowman

History. “The Monster Among Men” is no longer a giant loser when it comes to fighting for singles championships. Braun Strowman has had a number of matches fighting for the Universal Championship, but came up short every single time. Instead, he’s only won tag team gold with a child and Seth Rollins. So after pinning the Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura a number of weeks ago, he earned the right to get a shot for the title on SmackDown. Both Sami Zayn and Cesaro had the chance to be out at ringside and of course were involved in the finish. Zayn would pull off the turnbuckle for Nakamura to smash the head of Strowman on with Cesaro getting the attention of the referee. The stronger Strowman however managed to out muscle “The King of Strong Style”, slamming his head and picking him up for the Powerslam to win his first ever singles championship. It was a feel good moment for Strowman, who earned his way and finally accomplished his goal of singles gold.

That was SmackDown this week. Next week is sure to be another fun one as Roman Reigns seems to be drifting away from Baron Corbin, The Firefly Fun House returns, and The Dirt Sheet will be back.
