The NXT UK Recap (1/30/20)

NXT UK

This week’s episode of NXT UK was a huge one, with a massive six man tag as the main event and challenges being made (and officially signed) for next week’s show as the fallout from Worlds Collide set the landscape for what lays ahead for NXT UK.

Seeds Planted?

The main event six man tag team match that pitted Dave Mastiff, Mark Andrews, and Flash Morgan Webster against the Imperium trio of Alexander Wolfe, Marcel Barthel, and Fabian Aichner was a hard-hitting affair, to the shock of nobody. While the Welsh duo brought that dash of athleticism to the bout, the other four participants used their power to keep things in their advantage. As things broke down at ringside, the NXT UK Champion WALTER attempted to ambush Mastiff behind the referee’s back, but ‘The Bomber’ was able to fend off ‘The Ring General’. It was, however, enough to distract the superheavyweight, allowing the rest of Imperium to down Andrews with an assisted brainbuster to pick up the victory. This could have easily just been a tactic for Imperium to win the bout, but if WALTER and Dave Mastiff are indeed set for a collision course further down the line, then that will no doubt be one of the physically biggest matches in NXT UK history.

No Turnbuckles Necessary

For the first time since NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool II, Eddie Dennis was in attendance, as the former PROGRESS Wrestling Unified World Champion gloated about his victory over Trent Seven. The British Strong Style member would interrupt the Welshman though, reminding him of the fact that he had to use an exposed turnbuckle en-route to his victory that evening. As a result, Seven challenged Dennis to a rematch next week, with all twelve turnbuckle pads removed – a Steel Corners Street Fight. It’s rare you see those sorts of matches in a WWE ring, so it’ll be interesting in that sense, but at the same time, it’ll make for difficult viewing in hindsight seeing as this is the match where Dennis suffered yet another injury.

Across The Pond

205 Live star Oney Lorcan headed across the pond for this week’s NXT UK, teaming with his long-time partner Danny Burch as they were victorious over The Hunt (Wild Boar and The Primate). As is typical from these four, the entire match was a mixture of intensity and superior wrestling skills. The Hunt were the clear fan favourites here, both being cheered on, with The Primate very nearly gaining the victory with a lariat to Lorcan. Despite a hot tag that saw Boar come into the ring all guns blazing, he was spiked with an elevated DDT as Burch and Lorcan picked up the three count over one of NXT UK‘s finest tandems.

Building Momentum

Isla Dawn and Ridge Holland were both in action this week, with the pair of them scoring the win in their matches against Nina Samuels and Tyson T-Bone respectively. For ‘The White Witch’, this was a much-needed victory – she hasn’t done a lot in her NXT UK career, so a win, no matter who it may be against, is certainly ideal for her, even if it did come via a lucky rollup. As for Ridge, he continues to impress, as the Northerner fought back against T-Bone’s striking ability to maul through the NXT UK original. A Northern Grit emerald flowsion would ensure he remained undefeated in an NXT UK ring.

What Else?

In addition, a vignette aired to hype the NXT UK debut of former Pro Wrestling: EVE Tag Team Champion Aoife Valkyrie, Toni Storm was interviewed regarding her loss to Rhea Ripley at Worlds Collide, blaming it on NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray still being inside her head, Ilja Dragunov spoke about his Worlds Collide loss to Finn Balor while also letting Joe Coffey know that ‘The Iron God’ now had his full attention, A-Kid let Tyler Bate know that he hopes to one day be as good as Bate is, with the inaugural NXT UK Champion challenging the Spanish sensation to a friendly exhibition on next week’s show, and Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch stated they wanted their next test in NXT UK to be against Gallus.
