WWE Bringing Back King of the Ring Tournament

For nearly 20 years, WWE hosted an annual tournament that was a huge stepping stone for wrestlers to break out in the singles division. Starting in 1985, King of the Ring became a huge tournament that helped launched the singles careers of the likes of Bret “Hitman” Hart (1991, 1993), “Stone Cold” Steve Austin (1996), Triple H (1997), Kurt Angle (2000), Edge (2001) and Brock Lesnar (2002) to name a few. It ran annually from 1985 to 2002 (although there were missed years in 1990 and 1992), with it appearing sporadically after that in 2006, 2008, 2010 and lastly in 2015 (won by Bad News Barrett).

King of the Ring Tournament Returns

On Monday’s edition of Raw from Toronto, Ontario, WWE announced that starting next Monday, the King of the Ring tournament is back, with the tournament kicking off on Monday, August 19 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The news comes just a week removed from the death of the second-ever King of the Ring winner, Harley Race.
