Preview: AWF Showdown (2/16/19)

The Arizona Wrestling Federation (AWF) presents Showdown, Saturday, February 15th as the AWF returns to Sun Pac Studios, 1425 W. 14th Street, Tempe, AZ. BELL TIME 7PM. Two legendary teams square off in the Main Event, and four titles are on the line including a mystery opponent for the AWF Tag Gold.

Funny Bone vs Ricky Mandel

This is a matchup of oddities, but two very skilled athletes. Once you get by the weird part their opponents find out quickly that Funny Bone and Ricky Mandel mean business when the bell rings. Both these guys are terrific athletes who can compete anywhere in the ring. This will be a good scrap as there is no point playing the mental games since both are masters. Important match for both guys in the title pictures.

Rocketboy Wilson vs Hunter Freeman

Wilson has come into his own the latter part of 2018 and looks to add more gold in Arizona. Rocketboy has an unorthodox and effective style but sometimes gets himself in trouble making quick decisions when more thought would be beneficial. Hunter Freeman stands in his way and is trying to climb the same ladder. The 29-year-old is steadily improving and Wilson is the perfect test to see where he is in a competitive division.

Unleashed Championship: Philip Arthur Classic (PAC) (c) vs Parada

Parada took the Unleashed Championship down at Triumph in January, but PAC ripped it from his hands and the assigned official saw PAC with the gold and raised his hand as New Champion. Terrible result for Parada, but the referee’s decision is final. He got caught napping by Classic and must be more wary of the Challenger this time. PAC looks to take advantage and gain the upper hand any way he can, and Parada found out that he can literally have victory snatched away from him.

AWF Tag Team Championship: Alvaric Reiner & Mike Camden (c) vs ???

Reiner and Camden will defend their new Tag Team Titles against a mystery team. Here’s hoping it’s the Gods of War (Hammerstone & Graves). This pairing is strange, but so are most things with the Four-Time AWF Champion Reiner.

AWF Women’s Championship: Leslie Iris (c) vs Mystiq

Women’s Queen Leslie Iris has been to hell and back with her opponent dating back to last year. The challenger has attacked Iris every chance she gets including after she retained the title at Triumph. This time it’s one on one and Iris will need to keep her distance from her bigger, stronger opponent. Mystiq wants the second generation star to mix it up with her in an ugly fight, and the Champ will look to get the challenger off her feet, so she can work her superior ground game.

Arizona State Championship: Watson (c) vs “Chief” Owen Travers

The young and long-reigning Arizona State Champion Watson vs Travers is a contrast of styles. Watson is a tremendous athlete who wants to turn the match into a fast paced, hard hitting, physical contest, so he can set up for his devastating spear. He is so explosive delivering the sternum-busting shoulder anytime he wants. Owen Travers is one of the smartest wrestlers in the game. He prepares well, is a first-rate counter striker, and punishes mistakes. Travers is patient and methodical waiting for his opponent to be over aggressive and so he can gain an advantage. Big time test for the Champion as Chief is doing some of the best wrestling of his career.

Keepers of the Faith (Gabriel Gallo & Dom Vitalli) vs The Tribe (Navajo Warrior & Hawaiian Lion)

One of the greatest rivalries in Arizona wrestling history continues Saturday as the battle continues from the Gallo-Navajo Warrior AWF Title bout in January. These two beat the hell out of each other in and out of the ring until the assigned official called a halt to the contest to the dismay of the fans. The ring filled with wrestlers and AWF officials making failed attempts to split them apart until ultimately cooler heads prevailed. There isn’t any strategy here as these guys know each other well. It’s going to be a knock down drag out fight between four of the toughest to set foot in the ring.
