Josh Barnett vs Yuji Nagata in GCW: A Rematch 23 Years in the Making

Wrestling fans from around the world will descend upon Sin City on April 17th when WrestleMania rolls into town. But that won’t be the only wrestling showcase in Las Vegas that weekend. Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport event returns for its 15th edition under the GCW banner. And the latest addition to the card will have fans of Catch and Strong Style wrestling even more excited for the show.

Josh Barnett, who has competed in most of the Bloodsport showcases, has confirmed that he will be facing NJPW legend Yuji Nagata at the event. Barnett began his career in mixed martial arts, appearing in UFC, PRIDE, and Strikeforce, as well as other prominent MMA promotions. In 2002, Barnett made history by becoming the youngest UFC Heavyweight Champion of all time, aged just 24. He defeated the legendary Randy Couture at UFC 36 to claim the promotion’s premier championship.

A NJPW Rematch That Fans Thought They’d Never See

A year after his UFC triumph, Barnett debuted as a professional wrestler in NJPW in the most extravagant way possible. Appearing at the revered Tokyo Dome, Barnett challenged the IWGP Heavyweight Champion Yuji Nagata for the title. Despite being unsuccessful in his title bid, Barnett earned the respect of the Japanese wrestling world with an accomplished debut. And having contracted chickenpox leading up to his NJPW debut, his performance was considered all the more impressive.

23 years on, and the roles are reversed. Nagata travels to Barnett’s homeland to engage in an unexpected, but wholly welcomed rematch. With the nature of Bloodsport’s MMA and Catch style matches, Barnett will be looking to use his expertise to avenge his 2003 loss at the Tokyo Dome.

Barnett and Nagata’s rematch is the tenth match to be added to the stacked Bloodsport card. Among the 2026 edition’s competitors are WWE’s Nattie Neidhart, Pete Dunne, and Charlie Dempsey. Former WWE star Shayna Baszler will also compete, having returned to WWE as a guest coach late last year.

Nagata will be joined by a number of Japanese stars, including four-time Princess of Princess Champion Miyu Yamashita, Masashi Takeda, and Fuminori Abe. Fellow former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Zack Sabre Jr. will also make his second consecutive appearance after defeating Jonathan Gresham at Bloodsport XIII last year.
