Tsuji and Takeshita Through To The Semis

Yota Tsuji and Konosuke Takeshita successfully advanced to this year’s tournament semifinals after winning their respective quarterfinal matchups. Tsuji won against Shota Umino, and Takeshita overcame David Finlay.

The quarterfinal match between Tsuji and Umino in the main event was their fifth singles encounter, but only their second in a New Japan ring. It is also their second time facing off in the G1, in which Tsuji was victorious. Last year’s finalist, Gene Blast, will move on and wrestle House of Torture leader EVIL in the semifinals.

In the other quarterfinal duel, Takeshita and Finlay went toe-to-toe for the first time. The former was able to pull through even with the latter taking advantage of his beat-up knee, an aftermath of his B Block final match against Ren Narita yesterday.

The Alpha advances to the semis after getting eliminated by Tsuji in last year’s quarterfinal to face reigning tournament winner and IWGP World Heavyweight champion Zack Sabre Jr. for a second time.

Umino’s tournament campaign ends by reaching the playoffs this year, something he failed to do last year, while Finlay’s run ends with a quarterfinal loss after being in last year’s semis.

The semifinals will be on Saturday at Ariake Arena and will be followed by the finals on Sunday at the same venue.
