Why Rey Fenix Faced Nathan Frazer In His WWE Debut Match

Why Rey Fenix Faced Nathan Frazer In His WWE Debut Match

After weeks of vignettes, the April 4, 2025 episode of WWE SmackDown was the debut of Rey Fenix. The real-life brother of Penta has dazzled audiences around the world. Now he is ready to wow the WWE audience as well.

The first step to doing that is to have a match. Most of the time, these matches are short but entertaining. There’s usually a jobber on the other end of the ring.

Their only job is to make the debuting superstar look good while selling their moves. However, Fenix’s opponent was very different than normal. Nathan Frazer, currently NXT Tag Team Champion with Axiom, was the one facing him.

What transpired was an amazing match that actually helped both of them. Making Frazer the opponent was the best way to showcase them in a way that told everyone that both are future stars.

Rey Fenix and Nathan Frazer Work a Similar Style

If you watch NXT, you know how Nathan Frazer wrestles. His high-flying abilities and graceful athleticism showcase how agile he is in his matches. Alongside Axiom, who is also a luchador, they work together to win their matches and be a good team.

People who have watched Rey Fenix know that he is also that type of wrestler. He has his own ways of maneuvering around the ring with flips and dives. Both of them are masters of the high octane acrobatic wrestling style, which makes them a perfect combination to work together.

Wrestling someone with a grounded style would be better for a squash match. However, Fenix and Fraser went toe-to-toe for several minutes with tons of near falls before Fenix won the match. Two wrestlers with similar styles facing off helped produce a match that displayed both of their wrestling styles in a major way.

The Match Helped Familiarize Them to the Main Roster Audience

It’s been clear for weeks that WWE is really high on Rey Fenix. His vignettes, music, and presentation show that they want him to succeed. Down in NXT, the same thing is happening with Nathan Frazer.

Frazer and Axiom have been having matches that show why they are NXT Tag Team Champions. With Axiom having a great showing against Gunther a few weeks ago, it was time for Frazer to do the same. What resulted was a not-so-typical debut match that showcased both of their talents.

It shows that WWE trusts both of them and sees them as future stars. Fenix got to work with one of the best wrestlers in NXT today. Frazer followed in Axiom’s footsteps by wrestling a seasoned veteran.

Rey Fenix and Nathan Frazer had a great match that will surely have the main roster audience wanting more.

Both Fenix and Frazer Benefit From the Match

Usually, when a debut match happens, it’s a squash match with a lower card or NXT wrestler. However, Rey Fenix faced off with an amazing wrestler from NXT. Nathan Frazer brought out the best in Fenix while keeping up and showing off his own athletic abilities.

It would’ve made sense for Fenix to squash some jobber in 30 seconds with a few moves. However, WWE placed someone who is equally as talented with the same style of wrestling across from him.

They could’ve made Frazer look super weak. But they went back and forth, countering each other and making high-flying moves look easy.

In the end, Fenix won against someone that more than likely equally amazed everyone watching. Having Nathan Frazer be the first opponent of Rey Fenix in a WWE ring allowed them to show off their high-flying style in the most effective way possible.
