The Trios Conundrum: What’s Next for House of Black and the Trios Division in AEW?

AEW Comic Con panel sees House of Black attack Darby Allin

Last weekend at AEW Revolution, the House of Black (Malakai Black, Brody King & Buddy Matthews) won the AEW World Trios Championship in a fantastic match opposite The Elite (Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks) on the undercard. The faction, led by Malakai Black, was originally pegged by many fans as being the inaugural AEW World Trios Champion last summer when All Elite Wrestling (AEW) introduced the then-newly established AEW World Trios Championship. However, they went on to lose during the tournament semifinals. Almost 10 months later, the House of Black have gold around their waists. AEW is going to have a tough time coming up with credible challengers for the fresh champions since the trios division is pretty much dead on arrival.

The Elite is more than likely moving onto bigger things within AEW than chasing a rematch for trios gold. Tony Khan is going to have to do a hard reset for this division in order to breathe life into it after the (admittedly okay) Best of 7 series between The Elite and Death Triangle (PAC, Pentagon Dark & Rey Fenix) and The Elite’s apparent moving on to other things within AEW. Many teams, such as Dark Order, Best Friends, and maybe some form of Matt Hardy/Ethan Page & Private Party and Lucha Bros/Mark Briscoe will get shots at Malakai Black and company in the next few months before a potential feud with either Blackpool Combat Club or Wardlow/FTR on a big PPV for the promotion.

Hopefully, AEW stays away from the “spooky hijinks & lore” while the House of Black are reigning over the trios division but don’t really expect them to discontinue that particular aspect of the macabre faction. Malakai Black could definitely use a good run of momentum since, the last time his faction gained some momentum, they were bested (and derailed, somewhat) by former TNT Champion, Darby Allin, and Sting in a one-sided feud. This trios run has potential to be something especially fun but we have to try to keep expectations realistic by some of AEW’s recent booking standards.
