There are some underrated matches on WrestleMania 42 that are not talked about enough, and one of those matches is the United States Title Match between Sami Zayn and Trick Williams. Zayn dethroned Carmelo Hayes on a random SmackDown to become the U.S. Champion for the second time in his career, punching his ticket to WrestleMania, where he will defend the title against Trick. Zayn has been in a long-term feud with Trick ever since they first interacted in January 2026.
Zayn felt that Trick lacked humility on the main roster as an upstart who had recently been called up from NXT. Trick continued to show that mentality by condescendingly laughing at Zayn’s failure to capture gold and get the job done. Despite that dynamic, the fans continue to cheer Trick and boo Zayn.
Sami Zayn’s Heel Turn Sparks Kevin Owens ‘ Return
Henceforth, Sami Zayn and Trick Williams are reportedly being considered for a Double Turn at ‘Mania 42. The fans seem to think that Zayn is being over-pushed and overexposed. This is odd since he has never been a world champion in his entire career. However, it could be possible that the “slow burn” underdog chase for Zayn has become tiring for the fanbase altogether.
Although KFC is expecting Trick to get pushed to the moon, WWE can stretch this out into a trilogy with Zayn nefariously retaining the title at ‘Mania 42 as a heel with assistance from a returning best friend of his in Kevin Owens, who battled his last match at Elimination Chamber 2025 against Zayn before his neck injury took him off the shelf. This would not hurt Trick’s momentum, as it would tell a bigger story.
Trick Williams Needs To Strike While The Iron Is Hot
While Zayn prevails as a heel to solidify his reign after only recently winning the title back, this loss for Trick would garner babyface sympathy for him as a humbled face in a redemption arc to winning the U.S. Title in the summer. This is how the double turn should be completed. Many naysayers may despise this idea and merely want Trick to win at Mania to ensure that a new star gets his WrestleMania moment.
However, it is not that clear-cut and dry. There are levels to storytelling, and merely going for the “feel-good” moment immediately is not always beneficial to the show and the roster itself. WWE should strike while the iron is hot with Trick, but the idea of him fending off against both Owens and Zayn would spark a special reunion with an old friend that no one saw coming.
Carmelo Hayes Should Be Included In This Match
Imagine if Carmelo Hayes and Trick reunited as the Trick Melo Gang from their NXT Days? They did plant that seed of hope after reuniting to defeat DIY at NXT Homecoming in 2025. The idea of Carmelo Hayes being included in this match should be studied thoroughly because he was essentially robbed of a spot on the Mania card this year. Hayes added a lot of prestige to the U.S. Title during his run and deserved to be in the U.S. Title match at Mania.
However, it seems that WWE is not planning on adding him to this title match between Zayn and Trick. Nonetheless, he can still get involved by saving Trick from the wrath of Zayn and Owens. It would not only add more intrigue surrounding the U.S. Title but also add some spice to the tag division on the blue brand. This is a win-win.
