Finn Balor’s Demon persona was one of the coolest things about his gimmick. Although it’s hard to do a supernatural gimmick in today’s wrestling environment, Balor made it work before, especially in NJPW as Prince Devitt.
When Balor debuted in WWE, however, his Demon persona became more of a special-occasion attraction. The wrestler recently talked about this.
Finn Balor Talks About Issues With His Demon Persona In WWE
Speaking on Cody Rhodes’ What Do You Wanna Talk About podcast, Finn Balor said that in WWE, bringing out his Demon persona involved more steps than just painting his face.
There needed to be a storyline reason for Balor to turn into The Demon, which ended up making his regular persona feel inferior to his alter ego.
“Once I came to WWE, it kind of got muddled up a little bit, and there had to be a reason for why The Demon appeared. It all had to be storyline-based and advertised. In my mind, it was always just a cool entrance. It was something that changed me into like Braveheart puts on the battle paint and he goes to war. That’s the way it was for me. But in WWE, it had to be, ‘Well, what made him turn into The Demon? He had to get beat up and beat down and pushed to the limit to then turn into this monster.’ So then it became the point where… Finn wasn’t good enough. Only The Demon could win. So then Finn was lesser than The Demon, where they’re supposed to be the same. So that was one issue I had with it. The other issue I had with it was it was always advertised, which I like it to be a surprise. Like, ‘Oh, sh*t, The Demon’s here.’ It just comes out and kicks ass.”
It’s been two years since The Demon last appeared in WWE at WrestleMania 39.
