2025 WWE Journey of Gunther: From Triumphs to Setbacks and Time Away from TV

In 2025, Gunther was the most discussed WWE star, recording both outstanding successes and unfortunate failures. “The Ring General,” who held two titles for over a combined 1.5 years, suffered a resounding defeat at WrestleMania 41. He lost the World Heavyweight Championship title to Jey Uso.

Gunther did not anticipate a challenge as Uso easily took him down. During the following match, Gunther underestimated Jey Uso, as Jey’s record was spotless since the Royal Rumble in early 2025.

A Fierce Comeback

The defeat compelled Gunther to reshape and start afresh. It all worked out when he regained the World Heavyweight Championship on Monday night Raw.

That victory opened the door to another huge showdown—a clash with WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg, promoted as Goldberg’s final match. The fight, which took place at Saturday Night’s Main Event in July, saw Gunther emerge the winner, and another legendary name was added to his list of victims.

SummerSlam Against CM Punk

The momentum did not stop, and Gunther had quite the showdown at SummerSlam, defending, but unfortunately, losing his championship to CM Punk. The contest did not disappoint, but the “Second City Saint” was too much to handle, defeating Gunther to become the new World Heavyweight Champion in a main event reminiscent of old school WWE main events.

Gunther’s Time Off

According to the latest reports, Gunther is due for time off from WWE programming.  On the Wrestling Informer podcast, Billi Bhatti revealed that WWE originally had other creative plans for him. The former champion will make an appearance on the next season of WWE Unreal, where, in one plot sequence, Gunther would blade to sell a nose wound, which will be tied into a storyline.

Gunther did not go ahead with the spot, opting for a traditional blade job, but commentators were ready to call it as if he was bleeding from the nose.

Regardless of whether if this is a long sabbatical or not, we’re just going to have to wait for the “Ring General” to come back from his much-deserved rest.
