WWE SummerSlam 2025 was the site of the triumph of one CM Punk. It’s been almost two years since Punk returned to WWE at Survivor Series: WarGames. He battled through injury, controversy, and heartbreak, but he persevered. On Saturday against, arguably, the most challenging opponent he’s ever faced in the form of Gunther, Punk did the unthinkable, dethroning the “Ring General,” and in the process, securing his seventh world title in WWE, his first in the promotion since 2013.

These two created an epic matchup. Punk would take control of the first half, before Gunther came on thick with the onslaught for the latter half. They would trade submissions, signature moves, and even take it to the outside. Gunther would become frustrated and let trash-talking take precedent instead of offense. While he was on top of the announce table, boasting, Punk would sweep his feet, and Gunther would get busted open.
Punk smelled blood and went for the kill. After hitting two GTS on Gunther, Punk has finally become the “Best in the World” again.
It was a long, tough road, but 2025 turned out to be the best year, thus far, for CM Punk. He main-evented his first WrestleMania this year, opposite two of the biggest stars the company has to offer in Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. Now, he’s the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, winning it against a competitor of the caliber of Gunther.
