Preview: AEW Dynamite (02/06/24)

This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite feels like the true start of a new era. Sting’s retirement, the AEW World Tag Team Championships being vacated, and the new logo would be enough to signify it. However, we also have Big Business looming next week, with potentially game-changing debuts taking place. Not to mention, with Darby Allin soon to depart for his attempt to climb Mount Everest and Sammy Guevara’s recently announced suspension, this will potentially be our first time seeing a pillar-less AEW.

We only have one match announced for the card, but it promises to be an excellent match-up. We will see the first AEW Women’s World Champion, Riho, face off with former AEW TBS Champion Kris Statlander!

Who will keep momentum in an increasingly crowded women’s division?

Riho and Kris Statlander have been cornerstones of the AEW women’s division since the company started. Surprisingly, these two have only faced off one-on-one ONCE in their time with the company. It also happened on AEW’s one-year anniversary show! It was an early title defense for Riho, and she emerged victorious.

At one point in time, this would’ve been so pivotal to the division that it would’ve needed to be at least for the number one contendership to be justified. Now, the division is so deep that it makes sense to happen without grander stakes. The arrivals of Deonna Purrazzo and Mariah May definitely gave the division a much-needed jolt. Even with their incredible additions, we have the impending debuts of Megan Bayne and (allegedly) Mercedes Mone.

I see Kris picking up the win as she has the most to gain from it, and I have a feeling she could be the earlier-mentioned Bayne’s welcome to the roster. Regardless of the outcome, we are in store for a terrific can’t miss night!
