Preview: AEW Collision (07/29/23) – FTR vs. MJF & Adam Cole, AEW World Tag Title Match

A match graphic for AEW Collision featuring FTR vs. MJF & Adam Cole.

All Elite Wrestling makes its debut in Hartford, Connecticut at the XL Center for AEW Collision this week. All In and All Out now a month away, as AEW gets set for what will without a doubt be the biggest week in the short, 5-year history of the company.

AEW Collision also shapes up for a massive uphill battle next week as for the first time since the show’s inception, it will be forced to face off directly with a WWE Premium Live Event in SummerSlam. How will AEW prepare for such a massive undertaking that will become a monthly norm?

Double Clothesline Incoming?

The budding bromance between AEW World Champion MJF and would-be challenger turned tag team partner Adam Cole wound up forced together following a time limit draw between the two due to the dubbed ‘Blind Eliminator Tournament’. A mix of WCW’s rather infamous Battle Bowl concept in how the teams were paired up, but resembling far more in execution Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre’s annual “Torneo Nacional de Parejas Increibles” (Unbelievable Partners National Tournament).

Where rivals wind up showcasing impressive chemistry as MJF and Adam Cole gelled about as well as Mistico and Averno did in 2010. Winning the tournament after a dance-off against Sammy Guevara and Daniel Garcia as well as overall, treating the tournament overall as, in the most simple of terms: ‘sports entertainment’, this really has spurred the ire of the current AEW World Tag Team Champions: FTR.

Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler have always prided themselves as being the best of pure tag team wrestling and have worked extremely hard to fill those shoes as well as rid themselves of years of lacking creative from WWE. So seeing these two has FTR seeing red. They now clash tonight for the AEW World Tag Team Championships.

Can MJF and Adam Cole really stay together and capture the gold after hitting a Double Clothesline? Or will reality set in against the pinnacle of tag team wrestling and finally shatter this dubious friendship?

And Now For A Ladder Match

You know, if this was WCW, this would be a Mask On A Pole Match. While that joke is easy to make, as Andrade El Idolo’s return feud has been over the Black Mask tribute mask he likes to wear entering the ring of all things against the AEW Trios Champions in The House Of Black, it’s also been Andrade vs. Brody King or Buddy Matthews in fantastic matches. And that’s what we have here.

As we get a rematch between Buddy Matthews and Andrade with the added twist that it’s a ladder match this time. This will without a doubt be an amazing match as they follow up the first match. However, we’re still missing that amazing rematch from NXT Takeover: New Orleans all the way back in 2018. Which in itself was a rematch of Malakai Black’s (then Aleister Black) NXT debut in 2017.

Gold Trios Action

Darius Martin and Action Andretti have been a team in Ring Of Honor for the past few months now. Add AAA Mega Champion Hijo Del Vikingo on a rare free weekend for him to fly in and team up with them. They’re set to take on Bullet Club Gold. Collision’s highlight group. Though this incarnation will be Juice Robinson alongside the former AEW World Tag Team Champions The Gunns.

Does Gravity Have A Sweet Tooth?

Gravity is back. Again. After a victory at ROH’s Death Before Dishonor, getting reminded of PAC on AEW Dynamite, moving on to the semi-finals of ROH’s Eliminator tournament for the World Television Championship held by Samo-Hey, wait a minute! Well, in a rather odd choice, Samoa Joe, star of the now-released Twisted Metal series on Peacock, takes on Gravity in a non-title match.

Can Gravity make the most of this odd cutting in front of the line?

Some much-needed variety and depth is added to Collision’s line-up of featured women as Kiera Hogan and Mercedes Martinez face off and CM Punk is set to speak. All that and more set for tonight’s episode of AEW Collision.
