Match Point is an ongoing series at Last Word on Pro Wrestling, where we look at intriguing match-ups in WWE and beyond. They may be dream matches, first-time match-ups, or hotly anticipated rematches. Today’s edition will look at the upcoming Roman Reigns vs Cody Rhodes match on April 2 during WrestleMania 39.
One of the most anticipated matches in sports entertainment is upon us and will be the last match at WrestleMania 39 on night two, courtesy of WWE. This match pits the champion, the “Tribal Chief”, against the “American Nightmare” in a battle of experienced competitors, this will not be their first match at WrestleMania or against each other.
Roman Reigns vs Cody: What to Know Before the Match
Rhodes got the opportunity to face Reigns by winning the 2023 WWE Royal Rumble. Reigns, on the other hand, has been champion for 941 days, an incredible feat. Both are veterans of pro wrestling but how they made their marks is very different. Both come from a wrestling family as Cody’s dad is the “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, while Roman Reigns comes from a larger family wrestling tree. Both Reigns and Rhodes have a lot to lose in this match. Rhodes is coming back following his time in AEW, a company he helped create. Now he is looking to win his first Heavyweight Title in WWE. What happens if he doesn’t realize his dream on the biggest night of the year? Reigns has held the title for almost three years but his Bloodline stable is in trouble as the group seems to be crumbling. Is it possible Reigns loses his titles and his family on the same night?
Reigns has taken on all comers and put them down, one by one but is his time up as champion? Has he finally found his match in Rhodes? Will he have the Bloodline to worry about? Reigns is as dominant as any champion in WWE history. His battle with cancer was his biggest battle outside the ring but he overcame that. If he does in fact retain both titles at WrestleMania 39, what is next for Reigns?
Rhodes was successful in his first stint in WWE then he had a temporary leave and started the rival company, AEW. He is back with a head of steam, looking to take the title from the immortal Reigns. Rhodes is also coming off a torn pec that he wrestled with. Is he fully recovered? Reigns will truly test him and find out at WrestleMania 39. Cody Rhodes has accomplished so much in pro wrestling but where would winning the titles from Roman Reigns go in his story? Can Rhodes complete the story he started when he came back to WWE? Or is this an attempt to do something that is impossible?
Rhodes vs Reigns is set up to be a classic match. The final match in this WrestleMania 39 card will have a story when it is all said and done. Who will be standing at the end of WrestleMania 39 at the top of the mountain? Whoever it will be will have a target on their back come Raw on Monday night.
