#AndNEW: Claudio Castagnoli Wins the ROH World Championship

Claudio Castagnoli is the new Ring of Honor (ROH) World Champion. He defeated Jonathan Gresham in the first match of Death Before Dishonor, a decision that shocked many fans as the match was expected to close the show. Ian Riccaboni clarified that a coin toss took place to determine if this match or FTR vs. The Briscoes would close the show. William Regal accompanied Claudio to the ring and commentated on the match as well. Prince Nana was in the corner of Jonathan Gresham, following his purchase of Tully Blanchard Enterprises.

Claudio Castagnoli Captures the ROH World Championship at Death Before Dishonor

Claudio made his debut with ROH’s sister company AEW during the cross-promoted event with NJPW, Forbidden Door. He defeated Zach Sabre Jr. in his debut match before going onto the second ever Blood and Guts match. He joined the Blackpool Combat Club and was victorious in the titular match on the Dynamite following Forbidden Door.

Claudio has a storied history with Ring of Honor. He is a former two-time ROH World Tag Team Champion alongside Chris Hero as the Kings of Wrestling. It did not take long for Claudio to return to Ring of Honor following his #AllElite debut.

Two weeks ago on Rampage Jonathan Gresham retained his ROH World Title against Lee Moriarty. He retained his title before cutting a promo about being the best technical wrestler on the planet today. He was interrupted by Claudio who seemed to take an issue with the statement made by Gresham. Shortly after the confrontation, this match was made official, and Claudio got his chance at the World Championship and made the most of it.
