The main event of AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door saw Jon Moxley face Hiroshi Tanahashi, the winner being declared the Interim AEW World Champion. This match was made possible due to CM Punk, the current AEW World Champion, announcing his departure due to injury. Nonetheless, Punk would remain champion, meaning that an active titleholder needed to be crowned. Moxley won his spot in the Forbidden Door main event on the June 8 edition of AEW Dynamite. Meanwhile, Tanahashi defeated Hirooki Goto at New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Dominion show for his spot in said main event. In this first-time encounter, it was Jon Moxley that emerged victorious as the Interim AEW World Champion. Moxley will face Punk in a match to declare an undisputed titleholder following the latter’s return to action.

Jon Moxley, New Interim AEW World Champion
What to Know Following Forbidden Door Main Event Victory
No stranger to the world title scene, Jon Moxley won his first AEW World Championship at Revolution in February 2020, defeating inaugural titleholder Chris Jericho. During this time, Moxley was also the IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion for NJPW, making him the first wrestler to hold gold in AEW and NJPW at the same time. Moxley held the AEW world title for 277 days, defending the gold against Darby Allin, Eddie Kingston, MJF, and the late Brodie Lee, just to name a few. Moxley’s reign came to an end at the December 2, 2020 edition of Dynamite, known as Winter is Coming, in the main event against Kenny Omega.
