CM Punk Injured, Interim AEW World Champion To Be Crowned

CM Punk AEW World Championship

On Friday night’s edition of Rampage, CM Punk announced that needs to get surgery. Punk walked down to the ring with tears in his eye and a noticeable limp. Once he got into the ring, it made note that every bone in his body told him to go home, including the broken ones. After giving words to the fans, Punk revealed he will need to take time off due to the injury but will be back after this “bump in the road.”

Later in the broadcast, it was announced that there will be a number one contender battle royal to kick off Dynamite on Wednesday. The winner of that match will face current number one contender Jon Moxley for a shot at the interim AEW World Championship in the main event of the same show. And finally, the winner of that match will go onto Forbidden Door to potentially face New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Hiroshi Tanahashi for the interim AEW World Championship, though this part has not been confirmed.

Less than two hours prior to Rampage, Punk revealed he would be making an announcement regarding the championship and his career. This all comes five days after Punk defeated Hangman Page for the AEW World Championship in the main event of Double or Nothing. Punk had competed Wednesday night on Dynamite, teaming with FTR to defeat Max Caster, Colten Gunn, and Austin Gunn.

A new interim AEW World Champion will be crowned and whoever is the champion when CM Punk returns will face off to see who is the Undisputed AEW World Champion.
