WWE & FOX Announce Joint NFT Venture: WWE Moonsault

WWE Moonsault

WWE Moonsault is a new project created by what NFT news site NFT Evening dubs the “Entertainment franchise, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)”. Interesting way to describe the company, which is developing this project alongside FOX’s ‘Blockchain Creative Labs’, its own NFT creative division.

WWE Moonsault Launch During Wrestlemania Weekend

Announced by Stephanie McMahon at the annual ‘South By Southwest Festival (SXSW)‘, plans for such were made public last October. This new NFT marketing campaign will launch officially during WWE’s biggest weekend of the year, Wrestlemania. Plans for such include integration with WWE’s new official Discord server as well as what is described as integration with WWE’s monthly premium live events, previously known as Pay-Per-Views, for exclusive content. In short, these WWE/FOX NFTs will also grant you access to some exclusive WWE content.

This isn’t WWE’s first venture into NFTs, though this may be their most public venture. Last year, the company launched a set of NFTs centered around The Undertaker and John Cena. Cena’s was specifically given away in an auction that saw the winner receiving two tickets to this year’s two-night Wrestlemania with VIP access, a personalized WWE Championship belt and a neck chain worn by John Cena at Wrestlemania 35 in a throwback segment where he confronted Elias while using his “Dr. Of Thuganomics” persona.

Opinions on NFTs are widely varied. To some it’s popular, to others, it’s seen as either an environmental hazard or even so, a waste of money. But clearly, WWE is searching for extra incentives to garner curious buyers. As well as looking for ways to incentive the creation of their own online community. Curiously, the long-standing ‘sports entertainment’ promotion has always tried whatever social media venture they can. In the past, they’ve ventured into creating their own personal social media site for fans to interact, the aptly named ‘WWE Universe’. Which was first introduced as the ‘WWE Fan Nation’ in 2008. Years before, with the advent of AOL, they would hold exclusive chat sessions with wrestlers in the midst of their Pay-Per-View events.

History With Social Media

In 2012, they ventured into Tout, one of the various micro-vlogging platforms that preceded the now very popular Tik Tok. It was heavily integrated into their broadcasts and storylines, seeing it as a breakthrough in potential social media influence, but it floundered and fell inactive in 2014. And of course, we’ve seen how intertwined Twitter has become to not just WWE, but wrestling in general.

We’ll see in time if this ‘WWE Moonsault’ campaign proves to be a success for WWE & FOX. Once, again, this platform launches Wrestlemania Weekend, on April 2nd and will likely be promoted in some way at the two big events as well as on the weekly television programming.
