The Joshi wrestling scene (Japanese Women’s Wrestling) is a deep scene full of insanely talented performers and every month there are dozens of fantastic matches from promotions from Stardom to PURE-J and everywhere in between.  In this article, we aim to give readers a list of recommended Joshi matches that took place in the last month, there will be some honorable mentions and then a top 5 featuring our absolute favorites!

Important Note: Due to some matches not airing as of the time of writing some presumably great Joshi matches can’t be ranked.  Also due to the recent PPV Model adopted by a number of promotions we are unable to see every event.

5. Mio Momono & Starlight Kid vs AZM & Mei Hoshizuki

Anytime we get to see Marvelous and Stardom work together is a treat.  This time around the two companies put four of their best young talents in one match and let them loose.  What they delivered was a dazzling display of high-speed wrestling that was the definition of “blink and you’ll miss it”.  Not only was the wrestling in this one fast paced but it was crisp and filled with very difficult exchanges that these four pulled off with ease.  This is one that will get better every time you watch it.

4. Tam Nakano vs Saya Kamitani

Tam Nakano’s 2021 output has been somewhat surprising to those who have followed Stardom since her arrival.  While she always showed flashes of brilliance it wasn’t until this year that she really got to show what she could do in a string of high profile singles matches.  She and Kamitani slapped the daylights out of each other and that will never fail to get us into a match.  This is a match that has been panned by some and adored by others, check it out yourself and come to your own conclusion!

3. Arisa Nakajima vs Nanae Takahashi

Recommended Joshi Matches July 2021 - Nanae Takahashi vs Arisa Nakajima

Age-old rivals Nanae Takahashi and Arisa Nakajima renewed their grudge on Takahashi’s anniversary show.  For most of the year, the former rivals were actually a well-functioning tag team but Arisa Nakajima thrust Takahashi aside following Takahashi’s failure to beat Mizunami in a number one contender’s match.  Nakajima was the clear aggressor in the feud and that carried over to this match as she mercilessly beat on Takahashi with as many stiff moves as she could.  Takahashi was more than willing to fire back with equal vigour, and while this wasn’t on the level of some of their older matches, it was still an incredible hard-hitting match that has to be seen to be believed.

2. Chihiro Hashimoto vs Mio Momono

Intelligently worked with Mio utilising armbars and the like to combat Hashimoto’s power advantage. Hashimoto played her role well as the powerhouse while also keeping up with Momono on the ground.  Throughout the year these two have showcased some great chemistry in the long-running Marvelous vs Sendai Girls feud, and that chemistry was on display in this title match.  Not only are Hashimoto and Momono elite tier wrestlers but their powerhouse vs speedster dynamic makes them natural rivals in the ring.  The two play off of said dynamic very well with Momono always trying to find ways to get some momentum on the bigger, stronger Hashimoto.

1. Momo Watanabe vs Mayu Iwatani

Hashimoto vs Momono spent most of the month at the top of our list, it was comfortably ahead of everyone else despite the quality of Joshi wrestling in July.  Then Stardom decided to let two of their best wrestlers compete on Day 1 of the 5STAR Grand Prix.  Watanabe and Iwatani are not only two of the best wrestlers in Stardom but they have exquisite chemistry with one another.  Every time they step in the ring they deliver a classic with ease, and this was no exception.  Watanabe was on her best form in this match, she clearly set out with something to prove and that shined through in her performance as she matched Iwatani in every department, even unleashing a Muscular Bomb variation to get the win.  A motivated Watanabe vs the always excellent Iwatani on a big stage proved to be one of the best matches of the year.  As Mayu would say, check it out!!
