NXT Tag Titles Vacated Due to Danny Burch Injury

Danny Burch injury

WWE‘s most prolific champion, Vacant, strikes again. This time, it’s in the form of the NXT Tag Team Championship, which had been held by the team of Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan since October of last year. The duo had been an exciting team and strong champions, successfully defending against Breezango, Drake Maverick and Killian Dain, and most recently and impressively, against Finn Balor and Karrion Kross. Unfortunately, however, it seems that in that final match against Balor and Kross from last week, that Danny Burch suffered a separated shoulder injury and will have to miss time. Thus putting an end to Lorcan and Burch’s 153-day reign as champs.

On Tuesday, William Regal made the announcement official, tweeting that he had made the “difficult decision” to vacate the titles. Regal has promised an update on the “state of the titles,” this Wednesday on NXT.

Known for its high work-rate and incredible matches, NXT has been hit again and again with the injury bug lately with Burch’s injury the latest in a long string of unfortunate occurrences, including those around championships. It wasn’t that long ago that Kross had to vacate his NXT Championship, the outcome of which led to a tournament won by Balor. The current champ, who will surpass a 200-day reign, defeated Adam Cole to determine the new champion. It remains to be seen how Regal and NXT will handle the tag titles. Now, not only are the champions out, but so too are their would-be challengers as a broken hand suffered by Wes Lee of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Champs, MSK, not long ago, leaves their status in doubt as well.

The tag scene is certainly a bit murky right now. Lorcan is still eligible to compete. Perhaps he will find a new partner and will have a chance to challenge for the titles again. Or perhaps NXT will stage another tournament to crown new champs. There is also the looming presence of Grizzled Young Veterans, who finished as the runner-ups in the Dusty Classic. A GYV vs Lorcan/mystery partner match for the tag titles would be a fine answer to this predicament.

Either way, Burch’s injury comes as a blow to building a tag title match for TakeOver: Stand and Deliver. There is no doubt Regal will find a compelling solution, but in the meantime, we wish Danny Burch well on a speedy injury recovery!
