Match Point: Shunma Katsumata vs Chris Brookes

Shunma Katsumata

During his entire run in DDT, one man has managed to be a thorn in the side of Chris Brookes. That man is the current Extreme Champion Shunma Katsumata. On Sunday, March 14th at DAY DREAM BELIEVER 2021 they will fight once again for the belt that Katsumata holds. The stipulation is a Barbed Wire Casket Match!

This all started with a back and forth Twitter exchange between the two competing athletes which resulted in Brookes getting his Twitter suspended after a threat on Kasumata’s life. This lead to a hardcore match during DDT TV Show #2 in which Chris Brookes won.

Tensions seemed to ease as their contact with each other became limited and even involved an unsuccessful team-up. But it is clear some bad blood remained when after Shunma defended against MAO Chris Brookes made his challenge, a promise for it to be clean was made and immediately broken as Brookes attacked Katsumata as soon as the match was made. During a press conference, Shunma returned the favor of implementing a party popper and other weapons before declaring the stipulation would in fact be a Barbed Wire Casket Match in which the only way to win is by putting your opponent in the casket and closing the lid.

In most of their conflicts, Chris Brookes has ended up with his arm raised. But an added foil to the match is the show is taking place in the middle of the BJW Ikkitousen Death Match Survivor tournament. That being a round-robin-style deathmatch tournament. This raises the question of how healthy Shunma Katsumata will be for his defense of the Extreme title at DAY DREAM BELIEVER 2021? This could be expert timing for the crafty Chris Brookes, but Shunma Katsumata is known to have endless fight in him. Could this be the one to cement his reign?
